Portrait of Thomas Manton, half length in an ornamental oval frame on a pedestal, long hair, wearing skull-cap, bands and gown; coat of arms below; frontispiece to his 'Works' (1681). Thomas Manton (1620-1677) was an English Puritan clergyman. He held ministries at Sowton and Colyton (1640-1645), at Stoke Newington (1645-1656) and Covent Garden (1656-1662). During this last turn Charles II was returned to the throne and saw the enactment of the Act of Uniformity of 1662. Since Manton was on favourable terms with Charles II he was offered the Deanery of Rochester, but he refused on conscience grounds. Ex Collection: R. Hobson of Hove.

A young woman looking downwards over her right shoulder. Her hands are crossed in front over a bundle wrapped in check material which she is carrying. She is elegantly dressed in a hat with ribbons, a cloak, a trained skirt. A Mantua (from the French 'manteuil' ) was originally a loose gown for women which developed into an overgown or robe typically worn over stays, stomacher and a co-ordinating petticoat. From 'Caricatures, Macaronies & Characters by sundry ladies gentlemen artists &c.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.2' upper left and '6' upper right. BM Satires: 4991.

Part of a series "Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l’Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite execute pendant les annees 1830,1831,1832 sous le commandement de M. Laplace". Published in Paris in 1835 under the direction of Louise Auguste de Sainson. Under the command of Laplace, La Favorite explored Indian Ocean and the route to the Indies via the Strait of Malacca, between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea (1830-1832). Two scenes of daily life in New Zealand; the left shows a young lady and other ladies presumably dancing; the right a tattooed chief sitting with a staff wearing a cloak made from Phormium tenax (New Zealand flax) fibre.

A Maori 'waka taua' or war canoe. The scene was sketched by Sydney Parkinson, who had died before the expedition reached England; however, after a dispute over ownership of his work with Parkinson's brother, Hawkesworth removed every reference to Parkinson from the Official Account of Cook's first voyage. This scene was copied for the first French edition of Hawkesworth, 'Relation des voyages..' published 1774, but this example comes from a volume of Abbé Prevost's 'Histoire des Voyages', c.1777.

An allegorical map outlining the features around 'The Great Ocean of Love', including 'The Bay of Delight', 'Temple of Hymen' 'Cradle Point', the 'Quick-Sands of Inconstancy', 'Mountains of Deceit', the Dead Lake of Indifference and 'Callous Bay' on 'Divorce Island'. The surrounding text expands on the theme. Above the map are twelve lines of verse by Rev.d Dr. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), separated by a compass ross with the cardinals Hope, Love, Despair and Hatred. The National Library of Ireland has the same map, with the compass rose replacing the title, the text set differently and no quote from Watts, signed 'Callaghan Bro.s Lith. Cork'. Anthropomorphic satire: a black cat in a human smock faces a firing squad of monkeys dressed in the uniforms of French infantrymen. A monkey drummer-boy watches the scene, saluting(?); a tent, fortress and some cavalry in the background. Under Charles X's regime until the Revolution of 1830 the political caricature was prohibited by censorship in France.

A satire on the aspirations of the working classes. The affluently dressed dustman's wife asks her husband if he has seen the latest issue of 'La Bells Ass-emblee' (John Bell's La Belle Assemblée, or Bell's Court and Fashionable Magazine). The second droll is 'Very Wet', a coloured aquatint (180 x 140mm, trimmed to image), with a well-dress woman getting soaked despite her umbrella. Not in BM.

Etienne Marchand (1755-1793) the French captain, businessman and yachtsman. He led the Solide Expedition, which was the second successful circumnavigation by the French, which took place between 1790 and 1792. Little is known about the actual expedition and the exploration due to is commerical aims in the fur trade between the northwest American coast and China. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

An interior scene, with Samnite ambassadors entering to find Manius Curius Dentatus, (d. 270 BC), sitting by the hearth roasting turnips. When offered their armfuls of treasure Denatus, a Plebian famous for being incorruptible, refused, stating that he preferred to rule the possessors of gold rather than possessing it himself. As consul in 290BC Danatus ended the Samnite War, celebrating with a triumph. This is one of three plates from drawings by John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79) after 17th century paintings in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire, the others being Cignani's 'Charity' and Poussin's 'The Shepherds in Arcadia'. They were published in John Boydell's ''The Most Capital Paintings in England'', a five-volume series published between 1769 and 1786. The tomb of Maurice, Maréchal de Saxe in the Church of St. Thomas, Strasbourg, sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle from 1753-76. Maurice (1696-1750) distinguished himself in the wars of the Polish Succession and Austrian Succession, and wrote a famous work on the art of war, 'Mes Rêveries'.

A reversed copy of 'Marengo, the favourite charger of Napoleon I' after James Ward. Marengo (c.1793-1831), the Arab horse purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte after the Battle of Aboukir in 1799 and named after the French victory at Marengo in 1800. Marengo was captured after the Battle of Waterloo and brought to England, where, after his death in 1831, his remains were preserved. His skeleton can now be seen in the 'Changing the World' gallery at the National Army Museum.
