Examples of Wouwerman's work could be found in the leading 18th century collections of Dutch and Flemish masters in both France and England. The subject of a riding school was one he tackled many times in his career. The painting was in the collection of Marc-Rene de Voyer, 3rd Marquis d'Argenson (1722-87) who had become a friend after his father, the 2nd Marquis, had helped to secure Major's release from the Bastille where he had been incarcerated shortly after his arrival in Paris. On Major's return to England he developed a reputation as one of the best engravers of his day.

[n.d., c.1830s.]
Two hand coloured lithographs glued to one album page, sheets each 205 x 140mm, 8 x 5½". Sheets trimmed.
The Manneken Pis (Flemish for little man urinating), 'naked' on the left and clothed on the right, is a famous Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. On certain occasions, the statue is dressed in a costume. His wardrobe now consists of several hundred different costumes. The costumes are changed according to a schedule managed by the non-profit association The Friends of Manneken-Pis, in ceremonies that are often accompanied by brass band music. A descriptive ink mss. note below the image on the right relates how Louis XIV's modesty was so affronted by the statue that he endowed it with a 'rich wardrobe'.

Frederick G. Manning [&] Maria Manning.
[n.d. c.1849]
Scarce pair of engravings, sheet 130 x 275mm (5¼ x 10¾"). Trimmed and glued to album sheet. Creases from where previously folded.
Three-quarter seated portrait of Frederick George Manning (d.1849) and seated bust portrait of Maria Manning (nee de Roux c.1821–49). They were hanged on the roof of London’s Horsemonger Lane Gaol on 13 November 1849, after she and her husband were convicted of murdering her lover, Patrick O’Connor, in the case that became known as the ''Bermondsey Horror.'' It marked the first execution of a husband and wife together in England since 1700. Charles Dickens (1812-70) witnessed the public execution and condemned the behavior of the crowd in a letter to 'The Times' that same day. He later drew on Maria’s life when creating the character of Mademoiselle Hortense, Lady Dedlock’s maid in Bleak House.

W.m Manning, Esq.r M.P.
W.m Manning, Esq.r M.P. Governor of the Bank of England.
Painted by J. Lonsdale. Engrav'd by C. Turner
London, Pub.d Sept.r 18, 1813 for the Proprietor, by C. Turner, Warren Street, Fitzroy Square.
Fine mezzotint with very large margins, Proof on right; 610 x 370mm (24 x 14½").
Large full-length portrait of William Manning, merchant (1763-1835). Long associated with the Bank of England, he served as governor between 1812 and 1814. The son of planters from St Kitts, Manning was also a merchant trading to the West Indies, and an agent for Grenada and St Vincent. Manning was also particularly active in campaigning for the construction of a dock to serve West Indies trade (which opened on the Isle of Dogs in 1802).Manning, who made (and subsequently lost) a large fortune, was also father of Cardinal Manning. The classical architecture visible behind is presumably part of Soane's work on the Bank of England, most of which was replaced by Sir Herbert Baker's rebuilding in what Pevsner called 'the greatest architectural crime of the twentieth century'. Lonsdale's painting is in the collection of the Bank of England.
