Arthur Pond (1701-1758) was a British painter, engraver, print-seller, dealer and collector. He studied with John Vanderbank before entering St Martin's Lane Academy in 1720. He visited Italy in 1725-7 with George Knapton, John Dyer and Daniel Wray. This print, one of three produced by Pond from caricatures by Maratti, derives from a drawing by sold through Christies in 1988. The British Museum have drawings by Hugh Howard, who studied in Italy with Maratti (1697-1700) which may have been the basis for Pond's prints. Hake: 89. See British Museum no. 1874,0808.119 for Howard's drawing.

A Riding School in a country estate, after Philip Wouvermans the 17th Century Dutch painter. Examples of Wouwerman's work could be found in the leading 18th century collections of Dutch and Flemish masters in both France and England. The subject of a riding school was one he tackled many times in his career. The painting was in the collection of Marc-Rene de Voyer, 3rd Marquis d'Argenson (1722-87) who had become a friend after his father, the 2nd Marquis, had helped to secure Major's release from the Bastille where he had been incarcerated shortly after his arrival in Paris. On Major's return to England he developed a reputation as one of the best engravers of his day.

A Filippino village on stilts after a watercolour by Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-69). Born in Gdansk, Hildebrandt travelled constantly, including visits to the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam (Thailand), Macao, Hong Kong, China, The Philippines, Japan and the United States. He worked mainly in watercolours, and his paintings were exhibited in London in 1866 and at the Crystal Palace in 1868, just a year before his death in Berlin. A folio of chromolithographs, mounted in imitation of watercolour presentation, was published as 'Reise um die Erde', (Journey around the World).

Manneken-Pis. En petite tenue. [&] Manneken-Pis.
[n.d., c.1830s.]
Two hand coloured lithographs glued to one album page, sheets each 205 x 140mm, 8 x 5½". Sheets trimmed.
The Manneken Pis (Flemish for little man urinating), 'naked' on the left and clothed on the right, is a famous Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. On certain occasions, the statue is dressed in a costume. His wardrobe now consists of several hundred different costumes. The costumes are changed according to a schedule managed by the non-profit association The Friends of Manneken-Pis, in ceremonies that are often accompanied by brass band music. A descriptive ink mss. note below the image on the right relates how Louis XIV's modesty was so affronted by the statue that he endowed it with a 'rich wardrobe'.
