Richard Maitland, 4th Earl of Lauderdale (1653-1695). He was sworn Privy Councillor in 1678 and appointed joint General of the Mint with his father. In 1680 he was Lord Justice Clerk, but this title was removed after alleged suspicions of communication with his father-in-law, Argyll, who had escaped to Holland. He fought for the King at the Battle of Boyne, after which he retired and went to the exiled court of James II.

Makriyiannis or Makrigiannis (1794 - 1864), Greek merchant, politician and warrior, hero of the Greek War of Independence. From the rare folio 'Bildnisse ausgezeichneter Griechen und Philhellenen/Portraits des Grecs et des Philhelle`nes les plus ce´le`bres...' by Carl or Karl Krazeisen, published in Munich, Germany, with text in German and French. Published in parts between 1828 and 1831, the work contains 21 portraits and seven views or scenes. Krazeisen accompanied von Heideck and the Bavarian philhellenes to Greece in 1826 where he served as a junior officer. The portraits are amongst the best-known of the leaders of the War of Independence and are frequently reproduced. The original drawings are preserved in the National Gallery, Athens. A portrait of Kazimierz Malachowski of Gryf (1765-1845), a general of both the armed forces of Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland. After fighting with the French during the Napoleonic Wars, he is best remembered as one of the last Commanders-in-Chief of the failed November Uprising, assuming command shortly after the disastrous battle of Warsaw in 1831. From the collection of Leonard Chodzko (1800-71), a Polish historian active in the November Uprising of 1830 and the Great Emigration that followed it.

The Battle of Malaga, fought between the combined British and Dutch fleets and the French on 13 August 1704, less than a week after the capture of Gibraltar. The largest sea-battle of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), the result was inconclusive, although the French fleet never emerged from Toulon for the rest of the war. From a series of patriotic series depicting British naval achievements, 'England's Glory'. It was published by William Rayner (1699 - 1761) to promote a pro-war (with Spain) agenda, and to undermine Prime Minister Robert Walpole's policy of avoiding military conflict. Clayton: pp.150-51. A scene showing the Battle of Malaga in 1704, the largest naval battle in the War of Spanish Succession. The battle was fought between the United Provinces and England on one side and Bourbon France and Spain on the other. The scene is decorated with a ornate border, with a map of Malaga and its environs below. A plate from 'Repraesentatio belli ob successionem in Regno Hispanico...' published by Wolff.

A view of the Citadel and Port of Malaga, Spain. It was published in David Roberts's 'Picturesque Sketches in Spain', his first publication. Although the plate bears the initials of William Gauci as lithographer, it is known that Roberts worked on every stone. The success of this work enabled Roberts to finance his important excursion to Egypt and the Holy Land.

A spectacle and demonstration for the birthday of Charles IV of Spain on 20 January 1784. Pieter Hendrik Reynst (1767-1832) was a Vice-Admiral in the Dutch Navy, who commanded this re-enactment for the King. The original Battle of Malage was the largest naval battle in the War of the Spanish Succession, in 1704. Adrmiral George Rooke lead the English-Dutch fleet against the French, resulting in an allied stategic victory. The castle that stands in the background is Gibralfaro, an ancient fortress above the Port of Malaga. 1784 also marked the year that Malaga was granted with a Breakwater in the port.

The Cathedral of Málaga, engraved from a drawing by Francis Carter (1741?-1783) and published in his two-volume 'A Journey from Gibraltar to Malaga' (1777). Carter, a traveller and collector of coins, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries that same year, but died before completing his next work, a study of early Spanish printed books. One of a number of etchings of Spanish locations by Lionel Lindsay (1874-1961), Australian printmaker and illustrator. In 1902 Lindsay travelled to Spain, London and Italy, eventually settling in Sydney where he continued to work as an illustrator while developing a passion for etching historical views of the city and the harbour. He returned to Europe in 1926 where he made etchings and drypoints of landscapes and cityscapes. He was knighted for his services to art in 1941.

Lieutenant John Corbett served with the Royal Navy from the late 1830s to the 1870s, travelling in the Mediterranean, Africa & the Far East. In 1851, serving on the 'Penelope', he took part in the storming of Lagos under heavy fire, spiking the guns of the fort, making Lagos a British Province. He was Commander of HMS 'Inflexible' during the Second Opium War (1856-60), which, in 1857, towed the gun-boat 'Starling' 10,000 miles to Hong Kong after it was damaged in a storm.

Michel Malard (b.1676), religious controversialist and tutor in French. Raised by Catholic parents in France, he moved to England in around 1700 and converted to Protestantism at the French church of the Savoy in London. He then became an episcopalian and began publishing frequent attacks against the French committee for the distribution of the £15,000 allocated annually to French protestants (Malard's own allowance was withdrawn). Malard also wrote several manuals on French grammar, and in one, dedicated to George I, Malard is described as French tutor to the duaghters of the prince of Wales (and future George II). Not in O'D.

General Jacobo Malatesta, the commander of the Venetian forces on Cyprus in the 1560s, prior to the loss of the island to the Ottomans in 1571.. He seems to have been a member of the Malatesta family that ruled Rimini until expelled in 1500 by Cesare Borgia. He is shown in armour within an alcove with superb architectural details, a strap-work cartouche for a title left blank. On the reverse is a German-text biography relating to another portrait, within an ornate woodcut frame. Published in Jacob Schrenck von Notzing's 'Der aller Durchleuchtigisten und Grossmächtigen Kayser, Durchleuchtigisten unnd Großmächtigen Königen'.
