Pair of fine mezzotints. Each 485 x 360mm (19 x 14¼"). Slight damp staining.
Johann Casper Heilmann [1718 - 1760], a Swiss painter and draughtsman working in Rome and Paris. Johann Elias Haid [1736 - 1809] was a German engraver and publisher. Son and pupil of Johann Jakob, he published his own prints in Augsburg. These pictures were produced in the same year the Society moved into a purpose built home, designed by John Adam. The Honourable Society of Arts Manufacturers and Commerce, was founded by William Shipley as a fund to support improvements in the liberal arts, sciences, and manufactures. In 1758, the Society awarded medals divided into catagories: Agriculture, Chemistry, Colonies & Trade, Manufactures, Mechanics, and Polite Arts (painting and the plastic arts). Samuel More was secretary to the society between 1770 and 1773, and was one of the most important supporters of the society's awards.

The Old Maid's Thermometer. [&] The Old Bachelor's Thermometer.
McQueen & Co. Lithog. Printed by L. Harrison, 373, Strand.
Published by S. and J. Fuller 34, Rathbone-Place. [n.d., c.1820.]
Pair of hand coloured lithographs with letterpress, very scarce pair in fine condition with large margins; J. Whatman watermark paper 1820 (1/2 on each). Sheet size: 290 x 180mm (11½ x 7¼") each.
A humerous representation of the 'tragic consequences that awaited those who put off marriage'. 'The Old Maid's Thermometer' starting at age 15, descibes an attractive and amiable young lady who was so fond of charming those around her that she refused to settle on one suitor and grew up to be an unmarried, 'illhumoured', lonely woman who 'turns all her sensiblilty towards cats and dogs', and becomes disgusted with the world by the age of 50. Likewise, 'The Old Bachelor's Thermometer' explains how a prideful and handsome young man, who is too pleased with his own virtues to marry the woman he truly loved, soon finds himself to be an unwell 50 year old who unhapilly marries his prudent young housekeeper. Both tales are illustrated above the text.

Maiden Speech of a certain would-be M.P. respecting the re-issuing of One Pound Notes. Scene The House of Commons.
Robert Kay, Printer, Bury; in ink "1832".
Letterpress broadsheet. Scarce local printing. Sheet 350 x 290mm, 13¾ x 11½". Old folds, faint damp staining.
A satire on the debate on repealing the Bank Notes Act of 1826, which prohibited notes under £5 in England. Relaxing the regulations was particularly advantageous for areas away from the Bank of England in London, so the satire is based on the speech given by the Honourable Member for Bury (Lancashire) whose dialect is unintelligable despite interpreters being called in. One of the names mentioned is 'Mr Irving', probably John Irving who, at this time, sat on the Commons' banking committee alongside Alexander Baring of Baring Brothers.
