Dedicated to Maria Leszczynska, Queen of France (1703 - 1768). A re-issue of the plate originally published in 1759 by Jean Charles François (1717 - 1769). Published by engraver Gilles Demarteau (1722 - 1776), specialist in crayon manner, and numbered 'No 425' lower right. He numbered his plates from 1-560, and these numbers are followed in Leymarie's catalogue. Numbers 561 onwards (as this impression) are the work of his nephew and successor Gilles Antoine, who in 1788 published a catalogue listing 664 plates. There is in the BM a 1788 catalogue/price list that gives the subjects of numbers up to 664; so numbers from 665 onwards are later than the catalogue. After Joseph Marie Vien (1716 - 1809). A mezzotint by Valentine Green for 'A Set of Prints Engraved after the Most Capital Paintings in the Collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, Lately in the Possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton in Norfolk', 1773-1788. For some reason this plate was replaced by a stipple in 1782. The painting, formerly in the collection of Sir Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall, had been attributed to Domenico Zampieri (1581-1641), known as Domenichino. After Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591 – 1666), known as Guercino. One of a number of prints after drawings by Guercino and other masters in the Royal Collection, etched by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728 - 1815). The original drawings by the Bolognese artist were acquired by the Earl of Bute while on his Grand Tour, and later given to George III. The king's librarian, Richard Dalton, met Bartolozzi in Italy in the early 1760s. This brought Bartolozzi to London in 1764 under Dalton’s employ. The plates were later bought by the London publishers John and Josiah Boydell, and published in two folio volumes. This appeared in Boydells' 'Eighty-two prints, engraved by F. Bartolozzi & c. from the original drawings of Guercino, in the collection of his Majesty'. De Vesme 2167 [undescribed state].

The newly-born Christ adored by the Virgin and angels. Original etching by Carlo Maratta or Maratti (1625 - 1713), Italian painter, active mostly in Rome, known principally for his classicizing paintings executed in a Late Baroque Classical manner. The leading Roman painter of his day, Maratti was the last exponent of the great classical tradition of Roman painting that had originated with Raphael (1483-1520) and was continued into the seventeenth century by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) and Maratti's teacher Andrea Sacchi. This is one of Maratti's few original prints (he usually worked with professional engravers to make prints from his paintings).

Johan Gideon Loten (1710-89) was Dutch East India Company's Governor of Zeylan, taking the opportunity to collect natural history specimens. Soon after he returned to Europe in 1758 he moved to London, where he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1760. He donated watercolours, stuffed birds and mineral stones to the newly-founded British Museum and allowed Thomas Pennant and George Edward access to his personal collection, which they described in their books. However, after the outbreak of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War in 1780 Loten decided to return to Utrecht.

The three-masted ship 'La Favorite' sailing off the coast of Chennai (formerly Madras), on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, south India. She is sailing close to a smaller, two-masted vessel flying British colours. Here La Favorite is engraved for the account of her own voyage: 'Voyage autour du monde par les mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite execute pendant les annees 1830, 1831, 1832 sous le commandement de M.
