Two scenes on one plate: on the left a smiling macaroni stands at a table with dice on the floor by his feet, playing cards and a book entitled 'Women of Pleasure' on the table, a painting of a racehorse on the wall; on the right a skeleton representing Death leans on a funerary monument, a spade in his hand. The tomb is inscribed 'Here lies interr'd Dicky Daffodil ...&c.' and goes on to describe his death from dissipation in morbid detail. Matthias, also known as Matthew Darly (c.1721-1780) was a British engraver, printseller, drawing master specialising in 'Macaroni's'. He worked together with his second wife Mary Darly (fl. 1756–1779). BM Satires: 4645.

A satire on the popularity of Rowland's Oil or Macassar oil, a product for conditioning hair. A barber rubs the oil into a bald man's head, on the floor beside him is a fools cap. Behind them a woman looks aghast in a mirror as her hair stands straight up on her head. BM Satire 12405.

A full-length portrait of Catharine Macaulay (1731-91) leaning on a plinth lettered 'Government a Power Delegated for the Happiness of Mankind Conducted by Wisdom Justice and Mercy. A reversed version of the painting by Robert Edge Pine, c.1775, depicting the author as a Roman senator (to convey her commitment to representative government), now in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 5856). The painting also inspired a figure by the Chelsea-Derby Porcelain Factory (see BM 1887,0307,II.301). England's first female historian and the world's only female historian at the time, she is famous for her Whiggish 'The History of England from the Accession of James I to the Revolution'.

Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-59), historian, essayist and poet, published two years before he was raised to the peerage. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He served on the Supreme Council of India between 1834 and 1838: his 'Minute on Indian Education' (1835) encouraged the introduction of Western institutional education to India. A rare print: it was limited to 50 Artist's proofs and 50 proofs in this state. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Claudet (1797-1767) was born in France and originally moved to England to open a glass warehouse before moving into photography shortly after Daguerre's process became public in 1839. By the 1850s Claudet was one of the most fashionable photographers in London: he was awarded a Council Medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition and established his Temple of Photography at 107 Regent Street (for which a label is attached to this print) the same year.

She claimed to be a loyalist and only acted out of charity: she and her husband certainly had their property in North Carolina confiscated for supporting the Crown during the American Revolution. Flora Macdonald (1722 - 1790), Scottish Jacobite heroine who helped Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, claimant to the British throne, to escape from Scotland after his defeat in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-46. She was wife of Allan Macdonald of Kingsburgh. A very decorative and rare large image. Head and shoulders young woman with curly brown hair turned to the left. She is dressed in a gown with a lace collar, tartan, and a necklace. Her hair is heavily adorned with dark plumes. Early state, with the painter and engraver names only, and 'The Scottish Jacobite Heroine.' The British Musuem have a later state on thier website. Ex: Collection of The Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd.
