Se vend chez J. Golle à Amsterdam.
Mezzotint, rare, with large margins. Plate 222 x 165mm. 8¾ x 6½". Rubbed
Pasquier Quesnel (1634-1719) was a French Jansenist theologian who took a leading part in scholarly controversy, for example against Joseph Anthelmi. His Janesenist sympathies led to his banishment from Paris in 1681, and four years later he fled to Brussels where he remained until 1703. He was then arrested by order of the archbishop of Mechelen, but managed to escape and settle in Amsterdam for the remainder of his life. This print was made and published in Amsterdam during Quesnel's time there. Jansenism was a Christian theological movement, primarily in France, that emphasised sin, human depravity, the necesity of divine grace, and predestination.

Portrait of Pasquier Quesnel (1634-1719), Jansenist theologian, surrounded by a garland listing his published works. An unusual combination of portraiture and bibliography. In 2009 the Princeton University Library Graphic Arts blog, discussing their impression of this portrait, stated 'the only other impression we have located is in the Bibliothèque Nationale'. Our impression has been trimmed whereas Princeton's has, at the bottom, an empty rectangle flanked by two circles. This was presumably unfinished, to be filled with text and allegorical symbols similar to those in the top left and right corners.

Engraving, very scarce. Sheet 335 x 400mm, 13¼ x 15¾". Trimmed within plate, some creasing and wear; small tear at top.
A scene from the life of Francis II Rákóczi (1676-1735), leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Austrian Habsburgs, 1703-11). Brought up under Austrian supervision, he was arrested when secret dealings with the French were uncovered in 1700. Sent to the fortress of Wiener Neustadt, it was expected that his trial would end with his death, but, with the aid of his wife, he managed to escape (whether in women's clothes, as shown here, or not, is unclear), fleeing to Poland. When the War of the Spanish Succession broke out in 1704 the Hungarian rebellion began, but it floundered when the Battle of Blenheim made french support evaporate. In 1711 he again went into exile, settling in Turkey. He remains a hero in Hungary. Antonio Zatta & Son, important publishers in Venice, have given the scene a very contemporary look, perhaps reflecting their current problems with the Austrians.

Charles Louis Clérisseau (1721-1820), went to Rome in 1749 working for Robert Adam as a draughtsman during the architect's tour of Italy (1755-63). Many of the illustrations in Adam's 'Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro' (1764) were drawn by Clérisseau, without attribution. Paul Sandby etched this plate as a pair to the 'Triumphal Arch of Constantine at Fano', one of several aquatints he did after Grand Tourists.

[Leipzig, 1725.]
Engraving with very large margins. 305 x 430mm (12 x 17"). Spotting, creasing.
The Colossus of Rhodes, standing astride the entrance to the harbour. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was built in BC 280, when it was one of the tallest statues in the world. It stood for a little over 50 years, brought down by an earthquake in BC 226. The plate was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences in his building.
