Emblems of the garde royale and the garde nationale flanking the medallion, which in turn is positioned above a pediment with bas-relief showing the changing of the guard and inscribed “Il Veille Pour Nous, Veillons Pour Lui” ("He watches over us, we watch over him"). Louis, Dauphin of France (1661 - 1711) set full length into a highly decorative border consisting of emblems of the French monarchy. Below is an empty cartouche before inscription. Louis was the eldest son and heir of Louis XIV, King of France and his Queen, Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche. He was popularly known as le Grand Dauphin. This wasn't due to any sense of greatness but, rather, to his large physical size. He died before his father. Probably engraved by François Chéreau (1680 - 1729).

Rare mezzotint, platemark 370 x 250mm (14½ x 9¾"), with large margins.
Louisa, Queen of Denmark and Norway (1724-51) as a girl. The second daughter of George II, Louisa married Prince Frederick of Denmark and Norway, with whom she had five children, in 1743. Frederick became king following the death of his father in 1746 and it was hoped that Louisa would encourage Denmark to side with Britain against Prussia, although she was unable to influence her husband's policies. Louisa died following an operation on a hernia developed during childbirth in 1751. Engraving after a portrait by James Worsdale (c.1692-1767), portraitist and rake, whose success as an artist has been attributed mostly to his amusing conversation, conviviality, and clever singing and acting. He was involved in forming the Hell Fire Clubs in Dublin and Limerick, and had close associations with the stage in London and Dublin.

A Representation of the Tryal of Lord Lovat in Wesminster Hall [&] A Representation of the Execution of Lord Lovat
A Representation of the Tryal of Lord Lovat in Wesminster Hall [&] A Representation of the Execution of Lord Lovat
[Anon, c.1747]
Two engravings, dimensions 190 x 235mm (7½ x 9¼"), trial, and 110 x 175mm (4¼ x 7"), execution. Both trimmed inside platemark and glued to album sheet. Portrait of John, duke of Ormond verso.
Simon Fraser, 11th Baron Lovat (1667? - 1747) was a Jacobite executed at the age of eighty for high treason in the 1745 Rising, after a lifetime of devious intrigue between Jacobites and Hanoverians. A huge crowd attended his beheading, the last on Tower Hill, on 9 April 1747. Here his trial before the House of Lords is represented in the form of a plan showing the positions occupied by those present, while the scene of his execution includes a key identifying 'Lord Lovat's head on ye block', 'cloth to receive the Head', 'The Executioner with ye Axe', and 'The Coffin'.
For Hogarth's portrait of Lovat see ref. 24346; for another representation of the trial see ref. 17020.
