[Louis Quinze.] [S'il aima bien son peuple Il en fut bien aimé]
[Peint par Liotard] [Grave par Vispré]
[A Londres chez l'Auteur dans st Martins Lane et a Paris chez Buldet Quay de Gesvres.] [n.d. c.1760]
Rare mezzotint, proof before letters, 330 x 230mm (13 x 9"). Small margins. Cockling. Laid on album sheet at three corners.
Half-length portrait of Louis XV turned slightly to the right, gazing forward, dressed with a sash and the badge of the Order of the Saint-Esprit, wearing a frilled cravat and a queue wig, and holding his hat beneath his left arm; set within an oval frame. Louis XV (1710-1774) ruled as King of France and of Navarre from 1 September 1715 until his death on 10 May 1774. Coming to the throne at the age of five, Louis initially reigned with the aid of the Régent, Philippe, duc d'Orléans, his great-uncle, taking formal personal control of government on 15 February 1723, the date of his thirteenth birthday. Most historians view his reign as damaging, arguing that poor leadership and lavish spending weakened France, drained its finances, and undermined both the monarchy and its global standing. A minority, however, contend he was popular in his lifetime and later maligned by revolutionary propaganda. By the time Louis XVI succeeded him, the kingdom faced severe financial crisis and urgent need for reform, setting the stage for the French Revolution. CS 2 I of II. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Half-length portrait of Louis XVIII, seated slightly left before a curtain and pillar, facing forward. Louis XVIII (Louis Stanislas Xavier 1755–1824), known as “the Desired,” was King of France from 1814 to 1824, except for a brief interruption during the Hundred Days.
Scarce stipple and etching, first state. 345 x 265mm (13½ x 10½"), with large margins. Slight crease through lower left of plate.
Louis XVIII King of France (1755 - 1824), sitting at his desk in his study, writing a “méditation sur le bonheur de la France”; in a circular frame surmounted by the allegorical image of a pelican feeding chicks on a nest. Emblems of the garde royale and the garde nationale flanking the medallion, which in turn is positioned above a pediment with bas-relief showing the changing of the guard and inscribed “Il Veille Pour Nous, Veillons Pour Lui” ("He watches over us, we watch over him"). An interesting piece of royalist propaganda published when Louis XVIII had been on the throne for less than a year since his second restoration following Napoleon's Hundred Days', in July 1815. Louis XVIII was King of France and of Navarre from 1814 to 1824 (omitting the Hundred Days). He spent twenty-three years in exile during the French Revolution and the First French Empire, living in Prussia, the United Kingdom and Russia.

[Louis, Dauphin of France.]
[n.d., c.1710.]
Etching, proof before letters, 520 x 370mm. 20½ x 14½".
Louis, Dauphin of France (1661 - 1711) set full length into a highly decorative border consisting of emblems of the French monarchy. Below is an empty cartouche before inscription. Louis was the eldest son and heir of Louis XIV, King of France and his Queen, Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche. He was popularly known as le Grand Dauphin. This wasn't due to any sense of greatness but, rather, to his large physical size. He died before his father. Probably engraved by François Chéreau (1680 - 1729).

Rare mezzotint, platemark 370 x 250mm (14½ x 9¾"), with large margins.
Louisa, Queen of Denmark and Norway (1724-51) as a girl. The second daughter of George II, Louisa married Prince Frederick of Denmark and Norway, with whom she had five children, in 1743. Frederick became king following the death of his father in 1746 and it was hoped that Louisa would encourage Denmark to side with Britain against Prussia, although she was unable to influence her husband's policies. Louisa died following an operation on a hernia developed during childbirth in 1751. Engraving after a portrait by James Worsdale (c.1692-1767), portraitist and rake, whose success as an artist has been attributed mostly to his amusing conversation, conviviality, and clever singing and acting. He was involved in forming the Hell Fire Clubs in Dublin and Limerick, and had close associations with the stage in London and Dublin. CS 12
