Aquatint, printed in colours and hand finished. 380 x 665mm (15 x 26¼"). Extensive restoration, recoloured, laid on card.
A view looking down on London Bridge, with St Paul's Cathedral and the Monument to the Great Fire of London. From William Daniell's 'Six Views of the Metropolis of the British Empire'. The bridge is Old London Bridge, showing it after the 1762 renovation by George Dance the Elder, following the removal of all the buildings the previous year. He built a central Great Arch to help water flow, although the famed rapids are stil shown here, in this case following upsteam. Also shown are the alcoves built to shelter pedestrians and the balustrade. William Daniell RA (1769-1837) was one of the few artists of the period who was as skilled as an aquatinter as he was a painter. The margins have been given a grey wash in imitation of watercolour presentation of the period.

London. Plate IV.
Drawn, Engraved & Published by William Daniell.
No.9, Cleveland Street, Fitzroy Square, London, June 1. 1804.
Coloured aquatint. 470 x 718mm (18½ x 28¼")
View westwards from the south bank along the Thames with St Paul's upper right. From 'Six Views of London'. William Daniell was a much travelled landscape painter. In 1784 he went to India with his uncle, the artist Thomas Daniell, where he assisted Thomas with his drawing and sketching. By the time they returned to England in 1794, William was not only a proficient draughtsman but had also perfected the art of aquatinting. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1807 and a Royal Academician in 1822. He refused the post of draughtsman to an Australian expedition to instead make numerous sketching tours throughout England and Scotland. Daniell is regarded as a superb aquatinter and his best works are thought to be among his Scottish views for ‘Voyage Round Great Britain’. He died in London in 1837.

Copper engraving, laid paper, 245 x 160mm, 9¾ x 6¼". A good, clean impression.
A young Quaker girl standing with hands clasped at waist, a cloak under her left arm, wearing plain clothes with frilled sleeves and a headscarf. This is almost certainly the likeness of a real person; a note on an impression in the BM identifies the woman as Racheal of Covent Garden. On stone by E. Duncan. Day & Haghe Lith.rs to the Queen.
Published at 105 Leadenhall Street, 1st June 1838.
Coloured lithograph. Printed area: 490 x 285mm. (19¼ x 11¼"), with large margins.
The London and Croydon Railway was opened in 1839. Extensive earthworks were needed at New Cross, otherwise the gradient of 1 in 100 would have been too steep. This view shows the impact of the newly built railways on the surronding environment; the railway track and deep verges divide the landscape and a steam train can be seen travelling towards London.

The Company of Mineral and Battery Works was one of two mining monopolies created by Queen Elizabeth I in the 1560s. Various craft guilds were established in London as early as the 12th century, later becoming known as City Livery Companies because they often wore a distinctive livery or uniform. The companies decided who could work or trade in their crafts, controlling prices and wages, working conditions and welfare. In return for exercising rigorous quality control they received monopoly powers. In continental Europe, various revolutions in the 18th and 19th centuries swept away the guilds, but in England they continued, and several new Companies have appeared in recent years. A Long Headed Election.
Woodward del.
Published by T. Tegg in Cheapside [n.d., c.1806.]
Fine coloured etching. 255 x 360mm (10 x 14¼"), with wide margins Top margin with loss.
A crowd of 'Long Heads' listening to politicians on the hustings. 'Long Heads' developed from Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels'. According to Gulliver, Sythian women used to bind their children's heads so they would develop up rather than out, but eventually this became an inherited characteristic. The satire here is of people behaving artificially, following social convention rather than nature, like sheep.
