[Chart of Port Piraeus, and the Bay of Phalerum, &c.]
[Chart of Port Piraeus, and the Bay of Phalerum, &c.]
Drawn by A. Arrowsmith.
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraved map by T. Foot, with large margins. 325 x 495mm, 12¾ x 19½".
Map of Piraeus (the port of Athens) with Phaleron Bay (or Faliro) the original port, superceded by the construction of Piraeus, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Stuart (1713–88) and Revett (1720–1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'. This map was published in Volume 4; the general map of Attica in the same volume was signed by Arrowsmith.

A View on the River Po in Italy.
A View on the River Po in Italy. From the Original Picture by Claude le Lorrain In the Collection of the Right Honourable Lord Trevor [...]
Claude le Lorrain Pinx.t. James Mason Sculp.t.
Published Jan. 1.st 1769 by J. Boydell Engraver in Cheapside, London.
Engraving, sheet 475 x 640mm (18¾ x 25¼"). Small margins on 3 sides. Trimmed inside platemark top edge; good impression.
River landscape with figures loading boats, while chairs and cases nearby show that a picnic or concert has taken place, or is about to. From John Boydell's huge and influential series of engravings made from 'The Most Capital Paintings in England'. The source painting is here attributed to Claude Lorraine, although that attribution has been doubted by Marcel Röthlisberger: 'the incoherent distribution of the still-life motifs in the foreground - which may be due to the figure painter - is foreign to Claude; among the genre motifs, some, like the lute and the barrels, are frequent in his early work, others, like the pots with flowers and the chairs, never appear in Claude. (..) The picture may be by Claude, around 1629/31; or one of the numerous fakes of the 1630's of which Baldinucci speaks (...); or from the circle of Tassi, i.e. earlier than the above-mentioned works by Claude. It is unlikely that in 1638 Claude would imitate so closely a work of a predecessor. Until more is known about the circle of Tassi and the beginnings of Claude, the problem seems insoluble.'

[n.d., c.1792.]
Stipple, rare. Sheet size: 127 x 100mm (5 x 4"). Trimmed inside platemark. Laid on backing sheet.
A half length portrait of Stanislaus August Poniatowski (1732 - 1798), inclined slightly to left, with powdered hair, fur coat with a star of the White Eagle, and a white ruffle. In an oval. Poniatowski was the last King and Grand Duke of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (1764–95) and was recognised as a great patron of the arts and sciences and a supporter of progressive reforms. Arriving at the Russian imperial court in Saint Petersburg in 1755, he became romantically involved with the twenty-six-year-old Catherine Alexeievna (the future Empress Catherine the Great). With her support, in 1764 he was elected king of Poland. Against expectations, he attempted to reform and strengthen the ailing Commonwealth. His efforts were met with external opposition from Prussia, Russia and Austria, all interested in keeping the Commonwealth weak. The reforms were overthrown following a succession of wars which led to the Partitions of Poland, marking the end of the Commonwealth. Stripped of all meaningful power, Poniatowski abdicated in November 1795 and spent the last years of his life in semi-captivity in Saint Petersburg.
