The Right Honourable Sir Phillip Herbert
The Right Honourable Sir Phillip Herbert Knight Earle of Pembroke & Montgomery Baron Herbert of Cardiffe & Sherland [...]
Sr Antoni van dyk pinxit W. Hollar fecit Londini Ao 1642.
Rare etching, sheet 270 x 190mm (10½ x 7½"). Trimmed and glued to backing sheet with decorative border. Fine impression. Slight tear at bottom right.
Philip Herbert, first earl of Montgomery and fourth earl of Pembroke (1584-1650), courtier and politician. As a young man Pembroke was a favourite of James I. He fared less well under Charles I (whose queen Henrietta Maria disliked him), and this was no doubt a factor (along with his attachment to protestantism) in Pembroke's allegiance to parliament during the civil war. Pembroke was a great patron of the arts, who first commissioned the De Caus brothers to design a new palace for him at Wilton, and then (after that burnt down in 1647) enlisted Inigo Jones and John Webb to design a new house in the Palladian style. He was also a great patron of Van Dyck, after whose portrait of Pembroke this etching was made by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), etcher and draughtsman originally from Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic) who spent much of his career in England.

John Lord Hervey.
John Lord Hervey.
T. Cook sculp
Publish'd as the Act directs April 1st 1778 by Tho.s Cadell in the Strand.
Engraving, sheet 195 x 130mm (7¾ x 5"). Trimmed; false margins added.
John Hervey, second Baron Hervey of Ickworth (1696-1743), courtier and writer. In politics Hervey's fortunes were closely linked to those of Robert Walpole, of whom he was a staunch supporter. It was his support for Walpole that Hervey in 1730 became Vice-Chamberlain and Lord Privy Seal (a post obliging him to spend much time with Queen Caroline, who he became very close to) and was elevated to the House of Lords in 1733. Hervey left the government shortly after Walpole, in 1742. Hervey quarrelled notably in the 1730s with William Pulteney (over politics, culminating in a duel in Green Park in which both men were wounded), Prince Frederick (over women) and with the poet Alexander Pope (over both politics and women). Opposing Pope inevitably led to Hervey becoming part of literary history as a target for satire, particularly in Pope's 'Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot' (1735). Hervey was also a notable writer himself, whose posthumously published 'Memoirs' are an indispensible source for events at the court of George II from 1727-37. As his quarrels suggest, Hervey led an energetic sexual life. He was bisexual; Lady Mary Wortley Montagu wrote that humankind was divided into three sexes: men, women, and Herveys.

John Horne Tooke.
John Horne Tooke.
Envoye, d'Angleterre, annee 1792 au Cercle Social.
a Paris Rue du Theatre Francois No.4.
Stipple with etching, 220 x 135mm. 8¾ x 5¼".
A rare portrait of John Horne Tooke (1736 - 1812), radical politician and philologist, published in revolutionary France. Horne Tooke was an ardent campaigner for liberty and parliamentary reform. He helped establish 'The Society for Supporting the Bill of Rights' and was instrumental in organising the distribution of Thomas Paine's The Rights of Man in 1791. In 1794 he was wrongly accused of planning an uprising and imprisoned in the Tower of London. William Godwin's written attack against the charge of high treason was widely read and seen as decisive to Horne Tooke's eventual acquittal. Horne Tooke also achieved widespread acclaim for the Diversions of Purley (1786 and 1805), a major two-volume work of philology, the study of ancient texts and languages. The inscription below the portrait informs us that the sitter was a British envoy or representative at the French 'Cercle Social', an association with the goal of equal political and legal rights for women.
