Mary Robinson (1756/8?-1800), author and actress often known as 'Perdita'. It was while performing this role in Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale' in 1779 that she caught the attention of the future George IV, who fell passionately in love with her. After the affair ended in 1780 there was talk of blackmail and Robinson only returned the prince's letters in exchange for £5000 and the promise of an annuity. Her subsequent lovers included Colonel Banastre Tarleton and Whig politician Charles James Fox. In addition to being an exhibitionist who was painted and caricatured more than any woman of the day, Robinson was also a writer whose best works are now considered significant contributions to Romanticism (Coleridge called her a 'woman of undoubted Genius'). Engraving after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the leading portrait painter of the late 18th century.

Publish'd according to Act of Parlt. April 26th 1781 by I. Walker Strand.
Stipple engraving printed in sanguine, with very large margins. 125 x 175mm. 5 x 7". Light paper discolouration.
George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney [1719 - 1792] became a national hero when in 1780 he defeated a Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent, thus relieving Gibraltar. His crowning victory was at the Battle of the Saintes off Dominica, when on 12 April with thirty-five sail of the line he defeated the Comte de Grasse, who had thirty-three sail. The French inferiority in numbers was more than counterbalanced by the greater size and superior sailing qualities of their ships, yet five were taken and one sunk, after eleven hours' fighting. This important battle saved Jamaica and ruined French naval prestige.

Sir Joshua Reynolds Pinx.t. S.W. Reynolds Sculp.t.
[n.d., c.1820.]
Proof mezzotint. 230 x 165mm (9 x 6½"), with large margins.
Singer and writer Elizabeth Ann Sheridan (née Linley, 1754-92), painted as Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians and of Church music. She plays the organ seated on a low stool, two angelic children singing behind; from upper left, cloud with shafts of light. Miss Linley of Bath married the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan after eloping with him, in 1773. She was famous for her soprano voice, so the pose was obviously suitable. Sheridan, having ordered the picture, found he could not afford to pay for it. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1775. From "Engravings from the Works of Sir Joshua Reynolds', a four-volume set (later nine) with over 350 small mezzotints.
