H. Carraccio pinx: [...] F. Piloty del [c.1820]
Lithograph, sheet 420 x 370mm (16½ x 14½").
Lithograph after a painting here attributed to Annibale or Agostino Carracci, from 'Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim in Steindruck', a very large series of prints reproducing old master and modern drawings in Munich collections, published between 1816 and 1821. The lithographs were drawn by Ferdinand Piloty (as here) and his partner J.N. Strixner. Unlike its predecessor 'Les Ouevres Lithographiques' (1810-16), this series went beyond reproducing works of the German school to represent the entire painting collection in Munich. These prints were made while the technique of lithography was still in its infancy- colour lithograph was yet to be introduced and so the printmakers used one or two tint stones to add greater subtlety to the prints.
For other plates from the series see refs. 43534, 43535 etc.

Sir George Back (1796-1878), British naval officer and explorer of Arctic America. He twice accompanied John Franklin to Canada's Northwest Territories (1819-22 and 1825-7) and later conducted two expeditions of his own to the same region. The first of these expeditions, in 1833, was to search for another British explorer, John Ross, who had disappeared on an Arctic voyage in 1829. In 1836, promoted to Captain and given command of HMS Terror, he returned to explore the coastal region east from the mouth of the river. Having been caught in the ice and striking an iceberg he nursed the sinking 'Terror' across the Atlantic, having to beach the ship on the coast of Ireland. Ill-health forced him to retire from active service, but he advised the Admiralty during the search for Franklin, and was promoted to vice-admiral in 1863 and admiral in 1876.

John Bacon the Elder (1740-1799), was a sculptor, responsible for some important monuments, and a variety of statues in London and elsewhere. He was born in Southwark, son of a clothworker, learnt modelling under a porcelain maker in Lambeth, and by 1867 had become a modeller for Mrs Coade's Lambeth factory, while studying at the Royal Academy Schools. He later also worked for Wedgewood. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1770, and full Academician in 1777, and it was from around this time that he began to win major commissions for sculptural works, including in 1779 the monument to Chatham in Westminster Abbey.
