Le Comte de Kevenhuller Veld Maréchal, et General ~ Commandant des Armées de Sa Majesté la Reine d’Hongrie &c. en Baviére ~
J. Meitens Pinxit à Vienne. G. Bickham Sculp. London.
Publish'd by Wm. Meyer according to Act of Parliament; August 1742. Sold by Henry Overton without Newgate London 1745.
Copper engraving. 317 x 216mm. 12½ x 8½". Trimmed to the plate.
Ludwig Andreas von Khevenhüller, (1683-1744), Austrian field-marshal who came of a noble family that was originally from Franconia and had settled in Carinthia. He first saw active service under Prince Eugene of Savoy in the War of the Spanish Succession and by 1716 had been given command of Prince Eugene's own regiment of dragoons. He distinguished himself at the battles of Peterwardein (5 August 1716) and Belgrade (1717), and became in 1723 Major-General of Cavalry (General-Feldwachtmeister), in 1726 proprietary colonel of a regiment and in 1733 Lieutenant-General (Feldmarschalleutnant). After the Battle of Guastalla (19 September 1734), his skilful generalship won for him the grade of General of Cavalry. He continued in military and diplomatic employment in Italy to the close of the war. In 1737 Khevenhüller was made Field Marshal, Prince Eugene recommending him to his sovereign as the best general in the service. Khevenhüller surpassed himself in the War of the Austrian Succession. As commander-in-chief of the army on the Danube he not only drove out the French and Bavarian invaders of Austria in a few days of rapid marching and sharp engagements (January 1742), but overran southern Bavaria, captured Munich, and forced a large French corps in Linz to surrender. On his return to Vienna, Maria Theresa decorated the field marshal with the Order of the Golden Fleece. He died suddenly at Vienna on 26 January 1744.

Aquatint, printed in colours and hand finished. 395 x 505mm (5½ x 19¾"), with narrow margins.
A view of the 'third' Kew Palace, begun in 1802 by James Wyatt with much input from George III. It was much-ridiculed: in 1820 John Bew, in his 'The ambulator; or, The stranger's companion in a tour round London', wrote; 'This Angleo-Teutonic, castellated, gothized structure, (which has never been completed, and probably never will be,) must be considered as an abortive production, at once illustrative of bad taste and defective judgement'. The Prince Regent didn't like it and after the George III’s confinement at Windsor Queen Charlotte refused to live there. In 1828 it was demolished with the interiors used elsewhere: the main staircase was installed in Buckingham Palace.

How We Started for Khartoum.
Tom Merry [William Mecham]. del. Gilbert & Rivington, Limited, Lith., London.
''St. Stephen's Review'' Presentation Cartoon, September 6th. 1883.
Chromolithograph. Sheet 265 x 365mm (10½ x 14½"). Binding notches in bottom edge.
A satire on the Khartoum Relief Expedition, showing it as a a disorganised fleet of boats with soldiers rowing up the Nile. A sailor uses a fishing rod, catching a crocodile. On the banks are useless supplies, with famous names: Gilbey & Co Wines and Spirits; Pear's Soap; Preserves from Cross and Blackwell; and Fishing Tackle from G. Little & Co Haymarket. The expedition arrived two days too late, after which Gladstone was accused of excessive slowness in sending relief to Khartoum. Queen Victoria sent a telegram also rebuking him. William Mecham (1853-1902) had a music hall act in which he drew caricatures at lighning speed. 'St Stephen's Review', a Conservative weekly magazine, ran from 1883 to 1892.

a Kick at the Broad-Bottoms! _ i.e. _ Emancipation of "All the Talents". Vide. the Fate of ye Catholic Bill.
J.s Gillray inv.t & fec.t.
Pub.d March 23d 1807. by H. Humphrey St James's Street. [n.d. c.1825]
Finely hand-coloured etching, sheet 230 x 320mm (9 x 12½"). Trimmed within plate.
A copy of Gillray's satire, most likely made by John Philips (fl. 1825-1831). George III (face hidden by a pillar) has leapt from his throne, has Prime Minister Grenville by the hair and is about to smite him with his sceptre and kick him in the bottom. In disarray are the rest of the cabinet, including Petty, Grey, Addington, Sheridan and Erskine, falling over themselves to escape the king's wrath. George shouts '- what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you!'. A satire on the fall of the ministry of William Grenville, which was known as the 'Ministry of All the Talents' (February 1806 - March 1807). The fall was the result of George III's reluctance to approve the Catholic Emancipation measures that Grenville was trying to introduce. BM Satires: 10709 (D?)
