Unique letterpress contract completed with ink mss. Sheet 520 x 490mm (20½ x 16½"). Creases, wear to edges.
Very early West Australiana item. The 'Original' and 'Duplicate Original' of a land ownership contract, relating to the new settlement of Australind in Western Australia, the third part, the 'Counterpart', was retained by the company. The colony was set up with the intention of breeding horses for the army in India (thus the name Austral-Ind), and plots were sold to investors and prospective settlers in London and elsewhere. By 1841 there were 440 settlers but that year Methodist minister Rev. John Smithies wrote to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in London, ''If any of your friends are thinking of Austral-Ind as a point of emigration tell them to Stop. It is one of the greatest puffs that there has been for some time. I should be sorry if any of our Methodist friends or others should be so deluded as to embark for such a place''. Poor soil, summer droughts and winter deluges meant that by 1875 the settlement was abandoned.

The balloon shown in the image is Charles Green's famous Royal Nassau balloon (co-owned with Edward Spencer), from which Cocking jumped near Greenwich. His body was found in a field in Lee. Green and Spencer piloted the balloon that day, and survived.

On November 7th 1836 the English aeronaut Charles Green, accompanied by the polymath Thomas Monck Mason, made his most famous flight, from London to Nassau in Germany. The flight was at the time the world's longest, covering an estimated 480 miles (770 km) in 18 hours. This image shows the balloon passing over Koblenz, near the end of the flight. The balloon would land at 7:30 in the morning, and one can see the rising sun.

Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) was born in Westerkirk, Scotland. He was a stonemason, architect and civil engineer and a noted road, bridge and canal builder. This is a representation of his design, never realised, for the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The idea of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge originated in 1753, with a bequest in the will of Bristolian merchant William Vick, who left £1,000 invested with instructions that when the interest had accumulated to £10,000, it should be used for the purpose of building a stone bridge between Clifton Down (which was outside the City of Bristol until the 1830s) and Leigh Woods (then in Somerset). By 1829, Vick's bequest had reached £8,000, but it was estimated that a stone bridge would cost over ten times that amount. An Act of Parliament was passed to allow a wrought-iron suspension bridge to be built instead, and tolls levied to recoup the cost. A competition was held to find a design for the bridge; the judge, Telford, rejected all designs, and tried to insist on this design of his own, a suspension bridge supported on tall Gothic towers. Telford claimed that no suspension bridge could exceed the 600 feet (183 m) span of his own Menai Suspension Bridge. A second competition, held with new judges, was won by Isambard Kingdom Brunel's design on 16 March 1831, for a suspension bridge with fashionably Egyptian-influenced towers.

An extremely rare lithograph of the fishermen, fishwives and their customers gathered around a set of scales in an open-air fish market. All but two of the characters have been named in ink, both with hidden faces. According to the annotation the names were obtained 'from older fishermen in Ayr and revised by Deacon Gowan of the Sailors Incorporation of Ayr 4th June 1890'. One is 'Daddy Auld', probably the owner of the original painting, shown selecting a fish. It is likely this is David Auld (died 1852), the custodian of the Burns monument at Alloway, who lived in Doonbrae Cottage in the gardens of the monument. On the reverse is a photographic copy of 'The Rules of Ayr Poors-House' at its opening in 1756', with a printed list of the 'Committee of Management 1891-2', with the blind stamps of 'Marshall Wane' and 'Edinburgh'. Marshall, a photographer originally from the Isle of Man, had a studio in Ayr as well as Edinburgh.

Culzean Castle on the coast at Carrick, looking south towards Ailsa Craig. Designed by Robert Adam and built 1777-92, it was donated to the National Trust for Scotland in 1946. In the deal, General Eisenhower was given an appartment there, which he used four times, once during his presidency. From William Daniell's 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', a series of 308 aquatints published in eight volumes between 1814-1825, described by R.V. Tooley as 'the most important colour plate book on British Topography'.

In 1776 he produced a version of Voltaire's ‘Semiramis' at Drury Lane, which his brother officers attended in great force, securing its success. However Isaac Reed's '' Biographia dramatica'' (1782) described Ayscough as ‘a fool of fashion' and ‘a parasite of Lord Lyttelton'; 'Seniranis' is condemned as contemptible. Ayscough also editored the ''Miscellaneous Works'' of Lord Lyttelton, published 1774.

Féliz de Azara (1742-1821) was a Spanish military officer, naturalist and engineer. He distinguished himself as an engineer in the Spanish Army and was set to South America to negotiate the border dispute between the Portuguese and Spanish colonies. He spent twenty years in South America and sent various notes and observations of a zoological nature to his brother, the then Spanish Ambassador at Paris. in 1801 Moreau to Saint-Mery published these notes and observations under the title "Essaie sur l'histoire naturelle des quadrupèdes du Paraguay". On his return he wrote "Voyage dans l'Amerique meridionale depuis 1781 jusqu'en 1801".

A man wearing a headress and carrying a spear, The thick pencil-sketch style is a departure from Detmold's usual realistic etchings. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) and his twin Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were twins and child protegés who worked very closely together until C.M. Detmold committed suicide in 1908. Traumatised, Edward produced only one etching in the next fifteen years, returning to the art only in 1923.

High Priests at the altar of the Gods sacrifice prisoners as an offering to please the Gods. Published in Jean Frederic Bernard's monumental "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (Religious Ceremonies and Customs of All the Peoples of the World). 'The world's first encyclopedia of religions, the heavily illustrated, detailed general survey treating all religions dispassionately and as notionally equal, was composed and published in Amsterdam under the title 'Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde' in seven large volumes between 1723 and 1737 by a group of radical, intellectually subversive Huguenot refugees' (Jonathan Israel, 'How the light came in', TLS June 21 2013).
