View of the New Bridge over the River Tweed at Kelso, Scotland.
View of the New Bridge over the River Tweed at Kelso, Scotland. Inscribed to John Rennie Esq.r Civil Engineer & F.R. A.S.S. &c. &c. by his obliged and obedient servant, William Daniell.
Painted, Engraved & Published by W.m Daniell No 9 Cleveland Street, Fitzroy Square, London, July 25 1804.
Fine coloured aquatint. Sheet 460 x 665mm (18 x 26½"). Trimmed within plate on three sides, laid on archival paper.
In 1797 the old bridge over the Tweed was washed away by floods, and the Scottish engineer John Rennie (1761-1821) was called in to build this bridge. He used the new technique of combining cast iron with stone to create wide arches previously unheard of in bridge construction. The Kelso Bridge was so impressive that he won contracts to build three major London bridges, Waterloo (a larger version of this bridge), Southwark & London Bridge (completed from his design after his death). In 1854 the Kelso population had to be read the Riot Act when they protested against the bridge tolls, fifty years after completion, and long after the construction had been paid for. Three years later the tolls were abolished. This plate attests to the skill of Daniell as an aquatinter: whereas most aquatints have lines added by engraving or etching, this image is pure aquatint, even the boatman's pole and the black border.

From a series of six plates on the life of J. P. Kemble (‘Black Jack’). Kemble (1757-1823), in ragged shirt-sleeves, angrily whips a large top across the floor of a shabby attic. A thin old woman recoils in horror at the doorway. Around the room are signs of poverty: a rough fireplace with a flat-iron heating, laundry hanging to dry, a stool with soap-suds, heaps of coal with bellows, and a shelf with a few books, a cup, and a candle stuck in a bottle beside a bill for lodgings. A playbill for 'Beaux Stratagem' and 'The Cheats of Scapin' hangs on the wall, while an open book, 'We Fly by Night', lies on the floor.

Publish'd Oct.r 22.d 1782 by John Boydell, Engraver in Cheapside London.

In 1757 he joined the East Indies fleet, taking part in the capture of Pondicherry, 1761, and Manila. In 1781 he won the Battle of Ushant, with a vastly inferior force, defeating the French fleet under De Guichen and capturing twenty ships. Kempenfelt drowned in 1782 when the Royal George keeled over while at anchor off Spithead, drawing attention to the poor state of many British ships. The toll was over 900 lives. Tilly Kettle (1735-86) was a portrait painter and the first English painter to work in India, 1768-1776.

[Kenilworth Castle.] 21.
[Kenilworth Castle.] 21. [The Castle was built in 1122 by Geoffrey de Clinton, Chamberlain to Henry I. In the reign of King John, the Castle reverted to the Crown, the King paid several visits to it and he is believed to have constructed Lunn's Tower in the western corner. The Castle played an important part in the history of this country, and is associated with Simon de Montfort, the father of the British Parliament, and with Queen Elizabeth who was sumptuously entertained there by her favourite, Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. These entertainments were of times most fantastic and extravegant, and one costing Leicester £1,000 a day is reported to have lasted seventeen days. Sir Walter Scott has made Kenilworth almost as famour as Shakespeare did Stratford. It is thought likely that Shakespeare when a boy may have travelled to Kenilworth to see some of the gorgeous entertainments given by the Earl of Leiciester, and that in "Midsummer Night's Dream" he re-produced his youthful impressions.]

William Kenrick, AEt. 36.
William Kenrick, AEt. 36.
T. Worlidge f.ct.
[n.d., c.1756.]
Etching, 180 x 140mm (7 x 5½"). Trimmed inside platemark; glued to 18th century backing sheet along top edge.
Portrait of William Kenrick (1729/30-1779), writer and translator, portrayed at the age of 36. Volumes of Locke, Shakespeare and Milton by his side, and symbols of the arts and sciences, indicate his profession and interests. This portrait was made at a time when Kenrick was spending much of his time on the continent, but before his best-known achievements, which include translations of Rousseau and Voltaire and theatrical works. He also courted controversy, accusing Garrick of a homosexual relationship with Isaac Bickerstaff in his 1772 pamphlet 'Love in the Suds' (which went through five editions before Kenrick suppressed the work and apologized, fearing imprisonment for libel). Less successfully, he sought to goad Dr Johnson through critical reviews and accusations (against which Johnson maintained a stoic silence). By Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), 'the English Rembrandt'.
