[London: H. Graves & Co., 1842.]
Tinted lithograph with large margins. Printed area 290 x 380mm (11½ x 15").
A view looking past a group of camping Afghans to the fortress of Dost Mohammad Khan (1793-1863). It was his negotiations for help from the Russians that led the British to invade Afghanistan in 1839. Forced into exile by the British, he returned in triumph in 1842. During the British invasion the Battle of Ghazni (July 23rd 1839) was a significant victory: the loss of the city caused the Afghan ruler, Dost Muhammad, to ask for terms of surrender, but finding them unacceptable, he fled Kabul. From 'Sketches in Afghanistan' by James Atkinson (1780-1852), 'Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus, Bengal Division' during the ill-fated British expedition into Afghanistan (1838-42). A Persian scholar and linguist, Atkinson has been described as 'a Renaissance man among Anglo-Indians'. Because of his languages he met many of the Afghan protagonists, including both Shah Shoojah-ool-Moolk and Dost Mohammad Khan. Fortunately he left the British garrison in 1840 to take another post, thus avoiding the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842. In his book 'The Expedition into Afghanistan', also published 1842, he compared the British presence in Afghanistan to Sisyphus rolling his stone up the hill. Abbey Travel: 508.

Sitter appears to be The Shunzhi Emperor of China [1638 – 1661?], the second emperor of the Manchu Qing dynasty, who apparently supported the foundation of Jesuit churches in his kingdom. The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was successful in penetrating China and serving at the Imperial court. They impressed the Chinese with their knowledge of European astronomy and mechanics, and in fact ran the Imperial Observatory. Other Jesuits functioned as court painters. The Jesuits in turn were impressed by the Chinese Confucian elite, and adopted their dress and customs. Collection of the Royal House of Savoy and Italy.

A view of Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka peninsula. In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. After three years, during which time he visited Chile, California, Alaska, Kamchatka, the Philippines, Japan and Hawaii, he travelled to Australia. Outside Botany Bay he met up with Captain Arthur Phillip's First Fleet, after which he set sail and was never seen again, despite an extensive rescue mission. Fortunately La Pérouse took every oportunity to send his work back to France: one crew member disembarked here at Petropavlovsk and spent a year crossing Russia back to France; later journals, charts and letters he left with the British at Botany Bay. Thus his discoveries were not lost with him, but published posthumously in this work, 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde..'.

Kanguroo Dorsal (Macropus dorsalis). De La Nouvelle Hollande 1/12.
Werner & de Bar Del. Annedouche & de Bar sculp.
Imp Delamain et Sarazin Git-le-Caeur, 8 Paris [n.d., c.1855].
Hand coloured engraving. Sheet size: 257 x 172mm (10¼ x 6¾").
Plate 44 after a series of original paintings for Paul Gervais' 'Les Trois Règnes de la Nature: Règne Animal. Histoire naturelle des mammifères' (Paris, 1854-55). The animals were all painted by Werner, and the uncoloured backgrounds, in finely shaded pencil, were executed by Alexandre de Bar. The published plates were engraved on steel, and the animals alone were hand-coloured, leaving the backgrounds plain, as here. This print shows two Kangroos in their natural environment. Jean-Charles Werner (1798-1856) was a natural history artist and comparative anatomist for the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, where he contributed some 350 paintings of animals on vellum for the famous Collection des vélins between the years 1826 and 1856. The Collection, initiated in 1631, contained work by the finest natural history artists in France, including Nicolas Robert and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Werner provided illustrations for the publication of Dumont d'Urville's expeditions to Australia and the South Pacific, and also worked with Cuvier, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, and Henri Ducrotay de Blainville.

This version was engraved for the first French edition of Hawkesworth, 'Relation des voyages..' published 1774, but this example comes from a volume of Abbé Prevost's 'Histoire des Voyages', c.1777.
