Dr Johnson awaiting an audience of Lord Chesterfield.

Art Union of London 1880.
Mixed-method engraving. 580 x 710mm (22¾ x 28"), with very large margins.
Dr. Johnson in the ante-room of Lord Chesterfield in Chesterfield House, Westminster. Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, was a patron of Samuel Johnson's, but Johnson felt that what little Chesterfield had done was too late to be of any use. This scene shows Johnson sitting with irritation among a multitude of others waiting for his Lordship. It has hogarthian levels of detail, with portraits on the walls and figures including a black pageboy with a lute. It was published the year after the painter, Edward Matthew Ward, committed suicide during a mental episode. Ward's son, Leslie Ward, found fame working as a caricaturist for Vanity Fair as 'Spy'.

Sir Jos.a Reynolds Pinx.t 1756 H. Brocas Sculp.
[c.1795]
Stipple, sheet 210 x 115mm (8¼ x4½").
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, novelist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and political conservative, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. After working as a teacher he moved to London, where he began to write essays for The Gentleman's Magazine. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of William Shakespeare's plays, and the widely read novel Rasselas. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets. Engraving after the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, published in the Dublin journal, the 'Sentimental and Masonic Magazine', published by John Jones of Grafton Street between 1792 and 1795.

Johnson and Boswell. To Sir W. Temple 1871 Broadlands. R.C. Lucas.
Johnson and Boswell. To Sir W. Temple 1871 Broadlands. R.C. Lucas. 'Mrs Boswell who was one of the large class with small minds said that she had seen a man lead a bear but she never a bear lead a man until she saw Dr Johnson and her husband'. This class is still a vast majority. A lady refused to inspect my Johnson designs, saying the doctor nor his works were prett subjects for which I have given her the nightmare making the doctor and his books her incubus.
R.C. Lucas sculptor 1865
Etching printed in blue ink, with very large margins; rare; 180 x 270mm (7 x 10½").
Humorous scene apparently etched by the sculptor Richard Cockle Lucas (1800-83). Lucas' works included a statue of Dr Johnson in Lichfield, adjacent to the cathedral, and here he combines two jokes. The first is a depiction of Johnson leading Boswell by the nose; second is a parody of Fuseli's 'Nightmare' in which a woman of Lucas' acquaintance is haunted by his sculpture of Johnson (who she considered unfit as a subject for art). The print is seemingly dedicated to William Francis Cowper-Temple (1811-80), politician. Cowper inherited many of Lord Palmerstone's estates, including Broadlands, at Romsey. Lucas himself was a regular guest at Broadlands.

Dodd delin. Scott sculp.
[n.d., c.1770]
Engraving. Sheet 210 x 125mm (8¼ x 5"). Trimmed to plate on three sides.
On trial for 'coining' (counterfeiting) in 1714, Jane Housden was being brought down to the dock when William Johnson, a butcher with a conviction for highway robbery (although pardoned), tried to talk to her. When the gaoler Spurling told him he would have to wait until the trial was over Johnson pulled a pistol and shot him dead. Housden's trial was halted and both tried for murder and convicted. Despite having the entire court as witnesses for the prosecution, both continued to deny the offence until their executions on the 14th September. Johnson was then hanged in chains near Holloway, between Islington and Highgate. Engraving published in the 'The Tyburn chronicle: or, Villainy display'd in all its branches'.

Finely hand-coloured etching, 250 x 355mm (9¾ x 14"). Small margins. Left corner margin missing. Slight staining on right.
Lady Cecilia Johnston (1727-1817), shown three-quarter length and seated in an armchair in profile to the left, leans forward to kiss the nose of a large goat, which rests a hoof upon her chest. The goat was identified by Grego as Sir W. W. Wynn (1775-1850) however this seems improbable as he was only nineteen, having succeeded his father in 1789. This plate is most likely from, 'The Works of James Gillray from the Original Plates with the Addition of Many Subjects Not Before Collected,' published by Henry G. Bohn as there are two plates on the reverse, 'S.t Cecilia,' & 'A Spencer & a Threadpaper.'

Jones, Gray & Keen was a short-lived partnership active only in 1841. Charles Jones, stepson and former apprentice of London instrument maker John Gray (the elder), later worked in Liverpool with Gray’s son from 1839. Robert Keen, also linked to the elder Gray’s London workshop, joined them in 1841. A notice in The Examiner on 1 January 1842 announced the partnership’s dissolution and Jones’s removal, likely due to his death in late 1841. Gray & Keen continued in business until 1855, exhibiting marine barometers at the Great Exhibition.

John Paul Jones (1747 - 1792), American revolutionary war naval officer and hero. Jones' spectacular, well-publicized exploits helped to give the American Revolution credibility at a time when international support was crucial. His popularity in France made it easier for Louis XVI to support a colonial rebellion, and his notoriety in Britain undercut public support for an increasingly unpopular war.
