Pair of watercolours, each 270 x 360mm (10½ x 14"), mounted on album paper.
Two views of Nice, from the house of banker Honoré Gastaud, to the west of the town. He filled the gardens with exotic plants, making it an attraction for visitors including Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Napoleon III and Eugene in 1858 (two years before these views). In 1871 the house was rebuilt in Italianate style, and after passing through various owners and at one time serving as a luxury brothel, in was bought by the city in 1960. Now known as the 'Palais de Marbre' it houses the municipal archives within a park and is a listed historic building.

Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1831-91), third son of Tsar Nicholas I and brother of Alexander II. Trained for the military, as a Field Marshal he commanded the Russian army of the Danube in the Russo-Turkish War of 1777-8, which concluded shortly before this print was made. He did not distinguish himself in the war, however, and was removed from command following a series of reverses and unsuccessful attacks. Furthermore, he was charged with financial irregularities, of receiving bribes and embezzling money from the government. Following the assassination of Alexander II and succession of Alexander III (who had little respect for his uncle), Nicholas Nicholaevich was deprived of all influence.

From the rare folio 'Bildnisse ausgezeichneter Griechen und Philhellenen/Portraits des Grecs et des Philhelle`nes les plus ce´le`bres...' by Carl or Karl Krazeisen, published in Munich, Germany, with text in German and French. Published in parts between 1828 and 1831, the work contains 21 portraits and seven views or scenes. Krazeisen accompanied von Heideck and the Bavarian philhellenes to Greece in 1826 where he served as a junior officer. The portraits are amongst the best-known of the leaders of the War of Independence and are frequently reproduced. The original drawings are preserved in the National Gallery, Athens.

Plate 180 from 'Collection of the dresses of different nations, antient [sic] and modern. Particularly old English dresses; after the designs of Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar and others, with an account of the authorities from which the figures are taken, and some short historical remarks on the subject. To which are added the habits of the principal characters on the English stage', published by Thomas Jefferys between 1757 - 1772.

Gustaf Adam von Nolcken, Swedish ambassador in London (1764-93), wearing the Cross of the Order of the Polar Star, a Swedish order of chivalry. The Swedish embassy in London was at that time located on Portman Square, a short distance from its current location on Montague Place. After a portrait by Carl Fredrik von Breda (1759-1818), Swedish painter active in England for much of the 1780s and 1790s. Other portraits he painted while in England included Sir Joshua Reynolds and, when visiting Birmingham, several members of the Lunar Society including James Watt.

Etching by John Linnell (1792 - 1882), painter and printmaker who was William Blake’s last patron and a good friend of Samuel Palmer (who married Linnell's daughter Hannah). After specializing in portraiture during his early career, Linnell turned towards rural landscapes in later years, which sold for high prices. Linnell's reputation deteriorated after his death but his early, visionary landscapes have recently been the subject of renewed interest.

Oblong 8vo, with wrappers but loose; 41 (of 48?) wood-engraved sketches of which 4 are duplicates with different printed titles. Most of these have English translations either front or reverse of print in pencil. Some spotting. English translations in ms (printed text in Norse).
Carl Fredrik Diriks (1814-95), a Norwegian naval officer and director of Lighthouse Authority from 1855-82, published simple pencil drawings and watercolours of everyday life on the Norwegian coast. In 1865 the first edition of 'Sketches from Travels in Norway', containing only six sketches, was published anonymously. Such was the success of the book that ever-enlarged editions were published until 1882 and reissues after Diriks' death in 1895.

Two illustrations within a separately-printed frame-like border, a view and a map of the Moskstraumen, a series of currents and whirlpools around the island of Moskoe in the Lofoten archipelago, Norway. Its popular name, 'maelstroom' (a Nordic word derived from the Dutch combination of malen (to grind) and stroom (stream), was introduced into the English language by Edgar Allan Poe through his short story 'A Descent into the Maelström', 1841', which exaggerated the whirlpool effect. This was published in Vincenzo Coronelli's 'Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto'. Coronelli (1650-1718), was Official Cartographer to both Louis XIV of France and the Doge of Venice, as well as being Father General of the Franciscan order.
