Atropos (or Morta), one of the Parcæ, the Three Fates of Roman mythology, responsible for cutting the Thread of Life. She sits in an ornate garden the long thread in her finger tips and large shears in the other. Published by Pierre Mariette II (1634-1716) idely regarded as the most important publisher of the century. He was the son of Pierre Mariette I and, in 1655, married Madeleine, the widow of François Langlois, after which he took over the Langlois business at the “Colonnes d’Hercules.” In 1657, he established himself at his father’s address on Rue Saint-Jacques, à l’Espérance, of which he already owned a quarter share, and in 1663 he purchased the remaining portions outright. In 1658, he also acquired the “Colonnes d’Hercules,” which he initially leased to a hatmaker and later to a bookseller, before eventually transferring it to his son Jean in 1691.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American War of Independence. It was the longest siege endured by the British Armed Forces. In November 1781 the British garrison filed silently out of the defence works and made a surprise sortie. They routed the whole body of the besieging infantry in the trenches, set their batteries on fire, blew up and spiked their cannon, destroyed their entrenchments, and killed or took prisoner a large number of the Spaniards.

Attention: woman sat at desk, writing. Engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815), Florentine engraver and founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. After meeting George III's librarian Richard Dalton in Italy in 1763, Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. This is the medium employed here, one of many prints he made from designs by his fellow Italian, G.B. Cipriani.

Map of the peninsula of Attica, the region dominated by Athens in classical times. It was drawn by Aaron Arrowsmith, one of the leading English cartographers of the period, based on the survey made by James 'Athenian' Stuart and published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Stuart (1713-88) and Revett (1720-1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'.

Thomas Attwood (1783 - 1856), political reformer, by an unidentified artist. Attwood brought Birmingham to the edge of insurrection in 1832 to help ensure the passing of the Reform Act. Elected as Birmingham's first MP, he was a rare Parliamentary ally of Chartism and presented the first national petition to the House of Commons in 1839. Birmingham suffered two weeks of rioting following the petition's rejection. Attwood subsequently retired from public office and concentrated his energies on economic theory.

Thomas Attwood (1783 - 1856), political reformer, by an unidentified artist. Attwood brought Birmingham to the edge of insurrection in 1832 to help ensure the passing of the Reform Act. Elected as Birmingham's first MP, he was a rare Parliamentary ally of Chartism and presented the first national petition to the House of Commons in 1839. Birmingham suffered two weeks of rioting following the petition's rejection. Attwood subsequently retired from public office and concentrated his energies on economic theory.

Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a French composer. He was the son of a print-seller, and although he was expected to continue in the family business, his father allowed him to learn how to play many musical instruments. Auber attempted various compositions at a young age and one of his violin concertos was played at the Paris Conservatoire, which encouraged him to undertake a resetting of an old comic opera, Julie (1811). His opera "le Séjour militaire" was badly received in Paris, which forced him to stop for several years, however his failure in business and the death of his father in 1819, compelled him once more to turn to music. His second opera was just as unsuccessful, yet he persevered and the following year he was rewarded by his opera in three acts, "La Bergère Châtelaine". He then went on from success to success culminating particularly with "La muette de Portici" in 1828, which quickly became one of Europe's favourite operas of the time, and was the foundation work of the new genre, Grand Opera, which was consolidated by Rossini's Guillaume Tell the following year. In 1829 he was elected a member of the Institute and a year later, named director of the court concerts. His opera "Le Philtre", was taken and translated into Italian, and set by Donizetti as "l'elisir d'amore", one of the most successful comic operas of all time. He was made a member of the Legion of Honour in 1825 and attained the rank of commander in 1847. Napoleon III made him his Imperial Maître de Chapelle in 1857. Manon Lescaut of 1856 marked the beginning of his slowdown in compositions, which his opera "le premier jour de bonheur" as the last in 1868. He died during the upheaval of the Paris Commune in 1871.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he fought in the American Revolutionary War before travelling to France at the beginning of the Revolution in 1789. He began his political career with an anti-Jewish pamphlet 'Le cri du citoyen contre les Juifs', and was elected to the legislature in 1791. He served as President of the moderate 'Legislative Assembly' from 8 July 1792 to 22 July 1792, a month before the new National Convention took over, then as the Minister of Defense of France from November 1795 to February 1796. He was then appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, tasked with helping Selim modernise the army. He died of fever in Constantinople in 1797.

The scene makes reference to Lord Melbourne who was 'a guest at the dinner-table of Her Majesty, and when she was at Windsor, he lived almost wholly at the Castle. The desolate state of his own home was the subject of frequent remark in the daily papers, and furnished occasion for a good deal of pleasantry', from 'An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.', London 1841.
