Head and shoulders directed to left, head in profile, with a small beard and moustache, wearing a crown with a ribbon at the nape, a cloak of spotted animal fur tied in a bow over armour; in an oval with a plaque below showing spiked shields, spears and scimitar. Attila the Hun (406-453) was leader of the Hunnic Empire, which stretched from the Ural River to the Rhine River and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea. During his reign he was one of the most feared enemies of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. One of a number of stipple heads of Kings and Queens of similar format printed on quarto sheets, by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810. They probably appeared as illustrations to the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature ... Embellished by ... engravings. Compiled ... by John Wilkes'.

Elected as Birmingham's first MP, he was a rare Parliamentary ally of Chartism and presented the first national petition to the House of Commons in 1839. Birmingham suffered two weeks of rioting following the petition's rejection. Attwood subsequently retired from public office and concentrated his energies on economic theory.

The portrait was published a month after the Reform Act of 1832 received Royal Assent. Attwood was elected to Parliament in December that year.

Daniel Auber (1782-1871), the French opera composer. He was successful writing many comic operas; the Rue Auber leads up to the Paris Opera House, and the nearest RER station is called Auber, to remember his importance and success.

Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a French composer. He was the son of a print-seller, and although he was expected to continue in the family business, his father allowed him to learn how to play many musical instruments. Auber attempted various compositions at a young age and one of his violin concertos was played at the Paris Conservatoire, which encouraged him to undertake a resetting of an old comic opera, Julie (1811). His opera "le Séjour militaire" was badly received in Paris, which forced him to stop for several years, however his failure in business and the death of his father in 1819, compelled him once more to turn to music. His second opera was just as unsuccessful, yet he persevered and the following year he was rewarded by his opera in three acts, "La Bergère Châtelaine". He then went on from success to success culminating particularly with "La muette de Portici" in 1828, which quickly became one of Europe's favourite operas of the time, and was the foundation work of the new genre, Grand Opera, which was consolidated by Rossini's Guillaume Tell the following year. In 1829 he was elected a member of the Institute and a year later, named director of the court concerts. His opera "Le Philtre", was taken and translated into Italian, and set by Donizetti as "l'elisir d'amore", one of the most successful comic operas of all time. He was made a member of the Legion of Honour in 1825 and attained the rank of commander in 1847. Napoleon III made him his Imperial Maître de Chapelle in 1857. Manon Lescaut of 1856 marked the beginning of his slowdown in compositions, which his opera "le premier jour de bonheur" as the last in 1868. He died during the upheaval of the Paris Commune in 1871.

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet (1759-1797), French general and politician during the Revolution, show full-length in uniform, a battle raging behind. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he fought in the American Revolutionary War before travelling to France at the beginning of the Revolution in 1789. He began his political career with an anti-Jewish pamphlet 'Le cri du citoyen contre les Juifs', and was elected to the legislature in 1791. He served as President of the moderate 'Legislative Assembly' from 8 July 1792 to 22 July 1792, a month before the new National Convention took over, then as the Minister of Defense of France from November 1795 to February 1796. He was then appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, tasked with helping Selim modernise the army. He died of fever in Constantinople in 1797.

A scene inside an auction room, with the auctioneer (George Robins) standing behind a pulpit, auctioning objects listed to the left in an advertisement. The dishes to be auctioned are carried around by two men in the foreground, and examined by a man standing in to the left (Lord Brougham), and two men at the right (Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel). Two men standing in the background (Thomas Spring Rice, Lord Russell) are watching the scene. The scene makes reference to Lord Melbourne who was 'a guest at the dinner-table of Her Majesty, and when she was at Windsor, he lived almost wholly at the Castle. The desolate state of his own home was the subject of frequent remark in the daily papers, and furnished occasion for a good deal of pleasantry', from 'An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.', London 1841.

The artist, 'D.P.', has not been identified.

Charlotte Augusta, Princess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttell (1737-1813), daughter of Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales, and sister of George III. In 1764 she married Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick at St. James's Palace. During the Napoleonic Wars her husband died from wounds received in battle, and the princess returned to Britain in 1807, granted protection by George III. The engraver was Richard Purcell, who often used the alias of 'Corbutt', generally with the prefix of 'Charles', but sometimes 'Philip' or initials, when pirating other plates

Augusta, Princess of Wales (1719-72); wearing a bodice with lace around the neck-line, frilled sleeves, panniers decorated with tassels, an ermine-lined cloak, and a crown. Her left hand pointing out to the side, towards the base of a pillar with carved motif of the Prince of Wales's feathers in the right background. Princess Augusta Sophia (1768-1840) sat at a loom, spinning thread through her fingers. She was the sixth child and second daughter of George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She was a Princess of the United Kingdom and a Princess of Hanover. She remained unmarried and had a particular devotion to her brother William, Duke of Clarence, afterwards William IV. She was fond of visiting Weymouth in Dorset. George III and Queen Charlotte's admiration for Beechey's work led to commissions for royal portraits of their large family. In this protrait the Princess is seen spinning.
