The Late Colonel William Horton, Founder of the Trade of Stafford.
Lithographed by Miss H. Whalley [after Michael Keeling]. W. Lake, Printer, 50 Old Bailey, London.
[n.d., c.1830.]
Rare lithograph on chine collé. 275 x 125mm (10¾ x 5"). Packing paper with scuff.
William Horton (1750-1832) was one of the first to manufacture shoes on a large scale. In a warehouse on Mill Street (at the rear of his home at Chetwynd House) workers would cut out the leather parts of the shoe; outworkers would collect these shoe parts, assemble them in their own homes or workshops, and return the completed shoes to the warehouse to be paid and to collect more leather. At one time he employed over 1,000 workers, but the downturn caused by the Napoleonic Wars reduced the number to 300-400 by 1813. He was Lieutenant Colonel in the local volunteer militia, became Mayor of Stafford in 1804, and issued token coinage under his name between 1798 and 1803. Richard Brinsley Sheridan the playwright and local was a close friend.

The prophet Hosea praying by a river, with his son Jezreel fishing by his side. Behind are his unfaithful wife Gomer and two younger children, Lo-ruhamah (which translates as 'not pitied') and Lo-ammi ('not my people'). His marriage represents the breakdown in the relationship between God and the people of Israel. Originally published in a Dutch bible, 'Historiae Sacrae Veteris et Novi Testamenti', the red ruling suggests this example comes from the English edition, 'Figures of the Bible, in wich almost every history of the Holy Scriptures is discribed'.

Admiral Hosier's Ghost.
Admiral Hosier's Ghost. To the Tune of Come and listen to my Ditty. As, near Potro Bello lying / On the gently swelling Flood,/ At Midnight with Streamers flying/ Our triumphant Navy rode [...]
C. Mosley sculp [1740]
Scarce etching and engraving, sheet 395 x 270mm (15½ x 10½"). Trimmed around image and text; repaired tears and creases. Laid on album sheet.
The ghosts of Francis Hosier (1673-1727) and his crew appear to a ship carrying Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and his men, at Portobelo in Panama. Hosier led an unsuccessful unsuccessful expedition to the Spanish Caribbean (1723-27) and was in the course of a blockade of Portobelo when a virulent fever broke out and killed Hosier and 4000 men. Vernon succeeded where Hosier had failed, taking Portobelo in 1739, but, in line with the omens of this print, Vernon's initial success turned into eventual failure by the time of his return to England in 1742. This print was occasioned by the poem printed below, by Richard Glover, 'a blatantly political piece which sought to misrepresent Hosier's fate to support then current attacks on the Walpole government, ascribing his death to his resentment at the inactivity forced on him by government orders and his inability to prevent the devastation of his fleet by disease' (DNB).

[USA, c.1825.]
Engraved billhead/letterhead/trade card, sheet 140 x 205mm. 5½ x 8". Descriptive letterpress extract glued above image. Slightly soiled and stained.
Illustration of the hotel, surrounded by water and shipping; figures and carriages on the fore-shore, including anglers and a shooter with his dog. Nahant is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. Native Americans called the area "Nahant," meaning "the point" or "almost an island." Located on a rocky peninsula jutting into Massachusetts Bay, it was first settled in 1630, in the second year of the Puritan coming. The town became a resort destination very early on, with chaises coming from nearby Lynn. Visitors stayed in boarding houses or private homes and the first hotel was built by 1803. In 1817 a steamboat sailed from Boston to Nahant daily and by 1826 a stage from the Nahant Hotel connected twice a day with coaches running between Boston and Salem. Fishing and several shoe shops were the major businesses aside from agriculture and tourism and even up to 1830 year-round residents were very few. Thomas Handyside Perkins, a prominent Boston businessman, built a hotel in Nahant in 1823 which featured a bowling alley and by the 1840's the town was already celebrated as the summer resort of Boston's elite.
