Voilà la Monnoie des tributs que paye le Roi de Portugal.
J.M. Moreau le Jeane, Del. N. De Launay sculp. 1780.
[Geneva: Pellet, c.1780.]
Engraving with large margins. 280 x 215mm (11 x 8½").
Alfonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515), a Portuguese adventurer, built a fortress in Hormuz in 1509, dominating the entrance of the Persian Gulf. An insurrection by his lieutenants weakened him, but when the Persians demanded tribute from the Portuguese, Albuquerque showed him some guns and cannon balls and said 'Here is the tribute the king of Portugal will pay'. A plate from the Abbé Raynal's 'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens des Européens dans les deux Indes', a study of colonialism heavily influenced by the Englightenment, banned in his native France in 1779.

[London: Joseph Nutting c.1800 but later.]
Etching with engraving. 295 x 470mm (11½ x 18½"). Trimmed within plate top and bottom, losing title and publication line. Original folds.
An illustration to Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras', Part 2, Canto 2. A couple are being paraded back to back on a pony as villagers bang pots and pans, with cuckold's horns, in the form of a stag's head, a ram's head and a cow's head, held aloft. The woman holds a skimmington, a large wooden ladle often used to beat husbands. A 'skimmington ride' (or charivari) was a parade to shame a member of a community. Here it is shown as part of a Horn Fair. This print was first published with the title 'Skimmington-Triumph, Or the Humours of Horn Fair', by Joseph Nutting, c.1720, taking Hogarth's 'Hudibras and the Skimmington' as inspiration. This state has the additional text, ''I'll Wash Your Dishes, I'll Clean Your House' spoken by the male rider and 'Work you Rogue Work' by the woman.

John Horne Tooke (1736 - 1812), radical politician and philologist. Horne Tooke was an ardent campaigner for liberty and parliamentary reform who helped establish 'The Society for Supporting the Bill of Rights' and was instrumental in organising the distribution of Thomas Paine's The Rights of Man in 1791. In 1794 he was wrongly accused of planning an uprising and imprisoned in the Tower of London. William Godwin's written attack against the charge of high treason was widely read and seen as contributing decisively to Horne Tooke's eventual acquittal. Horne Tooke also achieved widespread acclaim for the Diversions of Purley (1786 and 1805), a major two-volume work of philology, the study of ancient texts and languages. He reclines on a sofa-bed beneath a canopy, his hands clasped together, books beneath him and notes towards a third volume of the Diversions of Purley at his feet.
