A boxing image. Half-length portrait of Edward Heardson in chef's hat and wearing a the medallion of Sublime Society of Beef Steaks (with a gridiron motif), carving a joint. The society was founded in 1735 by John Rich, Theatre Manager of Covent Garden, when he and his chief set designer cooked steaks on a gridiron over a fireplace becaused they were too rushed to go for a proper dinner. Others joined in and the Sublime Society began, limited to twenty-four members who would meet weekly. Heardson, a former bare-knuckle boxer became cook in 1756. George, Prince of Wales became a member in 1785, the same year this portrait was published; as he was patron to John Raphael Smith the suggestion is that he commissioned it. Frankau 170.I. CS:78..I. The Heathen Chinee.
[n.d., c.1875.]
Chromolithograph. Sheet 370 x 240mm (14½ x 9½").
A version of 'The Smile that was childlike', one of the illustrations of 'The Heathen Chinee', a narrative poem by American writer Bret Harte satirising the racial prejudice against the Chinese in northern California, especially from the Irish labourers who saw them as a threat to their jobs. First published in September 1870 as 'Plain Language from Truthful James', the narrator tells the story of how he and Bill Nye invited 'Ah Sin' to join a gambling card game which the Chinaman claimed not to know. Although Nye is cheating Ah Sin wins: he is attacked and revealed as a better cheat. The game ending in a riot with bottles thrown and guns fired. However James's claim that Ah Sin had 24 packs of cards up his long sleeves show his claims were exaggerated. The poem was an instant hit and was republished in newspapers across the country. However the satire was too subtle for some people: Eugene Casserly, a senator from California, thanked Harte for supporting his anti-Chinese immigration campaign. Despite the poem making him one of the foremost American writers of the period, Hart (1836-1902) called the poem 'the worst poem I ever wrote, possibly the worst poem anyone ever wrote'. Portrait of Miss Mortimer (possibly the sister of John Mortimer, the painter) as a scantily-clad Hebe, seen in profile to left holding cup, head looking down at eagle. In Greek mythology Hebe was goddess of youth and daughter of Zeus/Jupiter. She was cup-bearer and handmaiden of the gods who married Herakles/Hercules after his apotheosis. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales. See Chaloner Smith: 117. D'Oench: 136.
