A satire of the House of Lords as cattle at Smithfield Market, the majority wanting to follow Warren Hastings, who is dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding a nag (the horse of Hanover) and carrying off a calf with the head of George III, its forelegs tied together. Pitt and Dundas sit on a balcony unconcerned, drinking and smoking; Fox, Burke, and Sheridan, dressed as watchmen, topple off a watchman's box on which they have climbed to evade the cattle. At the front stands Edward Thurlow, Lord Chancellor, a fervent Hastings supporter. The suggestion is that the Lords were supporting Hastings in his impeachment trial for financial gain. W Havell.
[1807]
Rare pen lithograph. Sheet 320 x 230mm (12½ x 9"). Trimmed to image as normal, tipped on album sheet. Staining bottom right.
An early pen lithograph first published in the second issue of 'Specimens of Polyautography' issued in 1807. The first part of 'Specimens' (1803) was the first set of artist's lithographs ever published, showcasing the new medium which allowed artists to make prints arguably resembling drawings more than any earlier technique. Unlike most printmaking techniques, lithography required no special training as artists could work directly onto the plate and leave specialist printers to actually make the prints. For this reason many artists who were not trained printmakers (such as Géricault and Delacroix) often worked in lithography. By William Havell (1782-1857), landscape painter. This print was made in the year that the young artist moved from Reading to London, quickly establishing a reputation for his acute observation of nature. Havell later spent ten years living in China and India (1816-26), drawing many of his later subjects from these experiences. Ex Collection Hon Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

[Hawaii] A Man of Sandwich Islands.
W. Ellis del. J. Collyer sculp.
Published Decr. 14th. 1781 by G. Robinson.
Copper engraving, 175 x 110mm. 7 x 4¼". Chip to upper margin; a very fine impression.
From 'An authentic narrative of a voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty’s ships Resolution and Discovery during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780 : in search of a North-West passage between the continents of Asia and America…', by William Ellis, published 1782. Ellis was a surgeon's mate during Cook's third voyage, first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution, and gives quite a good history of this expedition. His account was published two years before the 'official' version. Ellis was also an amateur artist of some skill and the illustrations in the book are after his own drawings; they include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska and three of the Northwest Coast.
