Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, novelist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and political conservative, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. After working as a teacher he moved to London, where he began to write essays for The Gentleman's Magazine. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of William Shakespeare's plays, and the widely read novel Rasselas. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets. Engraving after the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, published in the Dublin journal, the 'Sentimental and Masonic Magazine', published by John Jones of Grafton Street between 1792 and 1795.

Half-length portrait of William Kingsley (c.1698-1769). In May 1745 he served at the battle of Fontenoy, where a cannon-ball passed between his legs and killed four men behind him. In the December of the same year, during the Jacobite Rebellion and the 'March to Finchley', he was sent to Northamptonshire by the Duke of Cumberland to obtain information of the enemy's movements. During the Seven Years war he distinguished himself at the battle of Minden on 1 August 1759, and was appointed Governor of Fort William in March 1760 but did not reside there as he was still on active duty against France, becoming Lieutenant General in December that year.

A bust portrait of General Stringer Lawrence (1697-1775), known as the 'Father of the Indian army'. Lawrence was the first Commander-in-Chief in India, and was actively engaged in a number of battles including Cuddalore, Pondicherry, and was in command at the capture of Devicota in 1749. In 1759 failing health compelled him to return to England. The East India Company erected a monument to his memory in Westminster Abbey. A plate from Tobias Smollett's 'History of England', published in 1757.

Stringer Lawrence (1697 - 1775), 'Father of the Indian army', standing at the door of a tent before an Indian fort, wearing uniform, with a stick in his right hand and his sword in his left. Lawrence served in Gibraltar and fought in the Battle of Culloden before being placed in command of the East India Company's troops in 1748. While acting as the governor of Fort St. David, he recognised the abilities of his junior, Robert Clive and assisted in his rise. He left India in 1759 after being elevated to the rank of Major-General. A rare portrait, after Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792).

Full-length portrait of Sir John Fleming Leicester (1762-1827), 1st Lord de Tabley, in peer's robes. It was incomplete when Joshua Reynolds died in 1792, so it was finished by his pupil, James Northcote. According to the Tabley House Collection (owned by the University of Manchester) the painting was reworked in 1826 (a year before Leicester's death) by John Simpson. This mezzotint was engraved after Leicester had died. The engraver is unknown; the BM describes an untitled plate (1852,1116.547) with the same description, published by John Jeffryes (d.1804.),

Portrait of Charles Lucas (1713-71), politician and physician, holding the thesis about gangrene that he wrote for his doctor's degree, engraved by James McArdell, a prominent Irish mezzotinter working in London, after a painting by Joshua Reynolds now in the National Gallery of Ireland. Lucas began as an apothecary in Dublin; however he published a number of pamphlets decrying the corruption of Dublin's aldermen, for which he was threatened with prosecution for seditious publications. He moved to London before going to the continent to study medicine. Returning to Dublin in 1760, he was soon elected MP, a post he held until his death.

Portrait of John Manners, Marquess of Granby (1721 - 1770), Commander-in-Chief of the Army. John Manners was the oldest son and heir of John Manners, third Duke of Rutland, who survived him. He was known by his father's subsidiary title of Marquess of Granby. Granby entered Parliament as an MP in 1741. His fame is based on his activities as a commander in the Seven Years War, where he served in Western Germany under Ferdinand of Brunswick. He was extremely popular as a commander, and this is reflected in the number of inns and pubs named after him. Granby became master-general of the ordnance in 1763, and the twelfth commander-in-chief from 1766 until 1770 when he retired from office. Numbered '36' lower right. After Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792), in reverse direction to the other versions of this portrait by Richard Houston.

Full-length portrait of Lord Robert Manners (1758-82), naval officer. Manners was made captain of the 'Resolution' in 1780 and was left in command of the ship in the West Indies that year. Manners, and the 'Resolution', were involved in the action of Cape Henry in 1781 and the battle of the Saints in 1782, in which Manners was severely wounded. It was hoped that Manners would recover, and he was put on board a frigate bound for England, but he died at sea after tetanus set in. This engraving is taken from a posthumous portrait by Reynolds now in the possession of the duke of Rutland at Belvoir Castle.

Together with her husband she was involved in charitable work such as the founding of Edinburgh's Royal Blind Asylum and School.

Reverend Zachariah Mudge (1694-1769), a clergyman known for his sermons, painted by Reynolds three times, in 1761, 1762 & 1766. When his friend John Smeaton finished the Eddystone Lighthouse in 1759, the pair sang the Old Hundredth Psalm as a thanksgiving from the top of the lighthouse.

Elizabeth Napier, nee Greenway (fl.1765) was wife of Francis, 3rd Son of Francis Scott, 6th Baron Napier. This print was engraved by Richard Purcell, using Corbutt as one of his many pseudonyms, as his prints were mainly piracies of other mezzotints. Both he and Sayer managed to avoid prosecution for copyright infringement.
