Rosalind.
Rosalind. vide Shakespears play of As you like it.
Painted by Angelica Kauffman. Engrav'd by Bartolozzi.
Lon. Pub'd Feb.y 10 1792 by J. Read, Coventry Court, Coventry St.
Stipple, platemark 195 x 150mm (7¾ x 6"). Trimmed inside platemark left and right.
Rosalind, from Shakespeare's 'As You Like It', after a painting by Angelica Kauffman, RA (1741 - 1807), Swiss-born Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. She attracted international patronage and was much admired by fellow artists. Kauffman's funeral in Rome was arranged by Antonio Canova and attended by representatives from both the Roman and foreign academies, carrying along in triumph of two of Kauffman's own works in obvious emulation of Raphael's funeral. Stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815). Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This impression from the collection of Dr. Augusto Calabi of Milan, art historian who co-authored (with A.B. de Vesme) the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Bartolozzi's work. This state is not listed in the catalogue.

Rufus's Stone / New Forest [ms]
[Mary Anne Theresa Whitby] Litho. Newlands 1825.
Rare lithographPrinted area and title approx 205 x 310mm (8 x 12¼"), with wide margins. Foxing.
The Rufus Stone, marking the spot where King William II is believed to have been fatally wounded in 1100AD during a royal hunting visit in the New Forest (the king was nicknamed Rufus). The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

M.A.T.W. [Mary Anne Theresa Whitby] Newlands Press [c.1828]
Lithograph, very rare with large margins; printed area 95 x 140mm (3¾ x 5¾").
Carriage for transporting a sculpture of St. Effisius, a Greek warrior who became a Christian and celebrated in Cagliari, Sardinia on May 1. In 1828 William Henry Smyth published his 'Sketch of the present state of the island of Sardinia' in which he wrote of the procession celebrating St Effisius: 'The gorgeous carriage then slowly advances; it consists principally of fine plate-glass, and containing the image of the Saint surrounded with lighted candles [...] I remarked to an acquaintance, that everybody appeared to be much attached to St. Effisius; "Ah!", said he, "it is with great reason; he saved our city from a dreadful plague,- he gave us rain when every other part of the island suffered from drought,- and he frustrated the designs of the French in 1793.' The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. Seaford Cliff. As it appeared immediately after the explosion (by voltaic battery) Sept.ber 19th 1850
Miss Nanny del.t
Chapé & Lefevre lith 99 Guildford St. Russell Sq.e
Lithograph and tintstone, very scarce; sheet 150 x 190mm (6 x 7½").
The explosion at Seaford, Sussex in 1850, which was organised in order to blast away a huge mass of chalk cliff to create a large rock groyne and prevent pebbles from being transported from the Seaford Beach towards Beachy Head. As shown here, the event attracted vast crowds (including Charles Dickens, who wrote about it for 'Household Words'). The explosion took place successfully, but the chalk was blasted into very small fragments which, rather than retaining shingle at Seaford beach, merely accelerated the eastwards flow of sediment it was intended to prevent.

The Barge of the Adventure saving the Crew of a Bombard [ms].
M.A.J. Whitby. Newlands 1828.
Rare lithograph, printed area and text 130 x 170mm (5 x 6¾").
This print probably shows the crew of the HMS Adventure coming to the aid of shipwrecked sailors, perhaps off the coast of North Africa. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) appears to have spent time in Italy and North Africa in the 1820s or before, and the Adventure was in Leptis Magna, near Tripoli in modern-day Libya, in 1817. Whitby was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. Scarce lithograph on laid paper, image 315 x 250mm.
A night view of a busy building where the viewer sees all the activity in the lighted rooms above the commercial premises below. Two women walking along the poorly illuminated pavement seem exagerated in size compared to the hairdresser's window the pass. The artist appears not to have made many prints but was known as a painter, printmaker and teacher. Baumann was particularly noted for her etchings, engravings and lithographs and lived in London where she studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Arts. [The Sylph]
[The Sylph]
Stothard del Sharp sculpt
Published January 1st 1788 by W. Lowndes
Engraving, platemark 190 x 205mm (7½ x 8"). Thread margins; slight foxing. Unfinished proof.
Illustration to the novel 'The Sylph' by the political hostess Georgiana Cavendish, duchess of Devonshire (1757-8016). Unhappily married to the duke of Devonshire, ensconced in the Devonshire House Circle, and drinking and gambling heavily, Georgiana published the book, a roman-à-clef about high society, anonymously. (It was an open secret that Georgiana was the author, although she was not publicly exposed). Like Sheridan's 'School for Scandal' (which emerged from the same milieu), it scandalized critics for its portrayal of the aristocracy as drunks, blackmailers, wife-beaters and adulterers. In this scene, the male figure, who while walking had noticed two beautiful women, pursued them but stumbled and fell as the earth gave way. They, believing him to be seriously injured, rushed to help him (the male being in no hurry to disabuse them of that notion). Engraving after the most prolific book illustrator of the late 18th century, Thomas Stothard, by engraver William Sharp (1749-1824). An important contributor to the revival of the classical style of engraving in England (in the lineage of Sir Robert Strange and William Woollett), some of Sharp's best-known works were after major pictures by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. Sharp refused to join the Royal Academy on the inferior 'associate' basis which was the only way for specialist engravers to join at the time), Sharp's importance was nonetheless demonstrated by the honorary memberships bestowed on him by the Imperial Academy of Vienna and the Royal Academy of Munich.

Coloured stipple partly in colour, 12 x 14" (305 x 360mm) Cut to the plate on three sides. Repaired tears. Repair causing loss to dedication and publication lines.
In Homer's Odyssey, under the influence of Athena, Telemachus leaves Ithaca in search of knowledge of his father who left for Troy twenty years ago. He first visits Nestor who regales him with tales of Odysseus' glory. Telemachus then departs with Nestor's son Peisistratus who accompanies him to see Menelaus and Helen. While there Menelaus and Helen tell complementary yet contradictory stories of his father's exploits at Troy. This print depicts this happening as he stands in the colonaded interrior and he burries his face in his robes in grief seemingly giving up, to the suprise of Menelaus enthroned at right and Helen standing at left, who extends her hand towards him.

Tinted lithograph. Printed area 330 x 220mm, 13 x 8¾". Faint spotting in margins.
An illustration from the beginning of Harriet Beecher Stowe's important anti-slavery novel, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Hearing her owners' negotiating the sale of her son Harry to raise money to save their farm, the black slave Eliza resolves to run away, eventually crossing the frozen Ohio River and escaping to Liberia. 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' first appeared as a serial in 1851, then as a book in 1852, both being an instant success. This English illustrated edition also appeared in 1852, with illustrations by Louisa Corbaux. Here Eliza hugs her small son, who is dressed in the girlish style fashionable in England at the time. With their pink cheeks neither look like black slaves, which was perhaps a decision taken to heighten empathy among the book's white readership.

M.A.T.W. [Mary Anne Theresa Whitby] Newlands [c.1828].
Rare lithograph. Printed area 105 x 140mm (4 x 5½").
