Etching, 235 x 325mm (8¾ x 12¾"). Trimmed inside platemark top edge; occasional staining; glued to backing sheet.
Two men bowing towards each other- a pastiche inn advertisement. Etched after Henry Bunbury, an amateur printmaker who subsequently enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. 'Prints by Bunbury an his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Clayton).

London, Publish'd July 10th 1784 by W. Dickinson Engraver & Printseller No 158 New Bond Street
Two stipples, each sheet approx 370 x 290mm Both trimmed to platemark.
Pair of costume prints after Henry Bunbury. Both depict women from the provinces of Savoy in south-eastern France: a woman from Montmelian playing the hurdy-gurdy; and the other from the vallée de la Maurienne holding hands with two children. Although facing away from us, she also appears to be carrying a hurdy-gurdy. Bunbury (1750-1811) was an artist and caricaturist who toured France in 1767 and took the grand tour from Paris to Naples in 1769. The drawings for these prints were perhaps inspired by his travels during those years.

An idealised portrait of a Scottish soldier in short kilt, feathered bonnet and sporran. He is armed with a flintlock musket, claymore and dagger. Although this print looks like it was published in England, Antonio Suntach (1744-1828) worked in Venice, often copying the works of others, which accounts for the strange spelling of the title, artist and date.

Mr. Bunbury del. Js. Bretherton f.
London. Publish'd Feb.y 27.th 1799, by J. Harris, Sweetings Alley, Cornhill.
Very fine hand-coloured etching. Plate 285 x 406mm (11¼ x 16"). Fine colour.
An elderly country parson, in profile to the right, on a horse which rears almost vertically, he clasps the animal round the neck, and is seated on his hind-quarters, having lost his stirrups and slipped from the saddle. His whip flies through the air behind him, his coat-tails fly out, and the sheets of his sermon inscribed 'IOB' protrude from his pocket. A small dog rushing towards the animal's hind-legs and barking furiously appears to have caused the 'symptoms of rearing'. The parish clerk, with two large volumes under his arm, beside the horse, looks over his right shoulder and stoops or runs to escape being trampled on. Trees and a church steeple are indicated in the background.
