London Printed for Robert Wilkinson No.58 Cornhill, & Bowles & Carver, No. 69 St.Pauls Church Yard.
Beautifully coloured engraving, J. Whatman watermark; plate 255 x 405mm (10 x 16"), with large margins. Some surface dirt mainly focused in the margins but also within the plate mark.
A view in Green Park of the structure made for the firework display celebrating the end of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748) and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen). The structure was designed by the Franco-Italian architect, decorator and artist Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni (1695–1766). The illuminations were accompanied by music composed for the occasion and conducted by George Frideric Handel (1685–1759). The display was not as successful as the music itself: rainy weather caused many misfires, the right pavilion caught fire in the middle of the show, as well as several injuries.

William Green was governor of Rhode Island and cousin to Nathanael Greene (1742-86). As the French inscription described the sitter as Major General it is more likely to be a portrait of Nathanael Greene hero of the American Revolutionary War. When the War began, Greene was a militia private, the lowest rank possible; he emerged from the war as a major general of the Continental Army.

Seymour Del Etch'd by Shortshanks.
London Published by Tho.s Mc.Lean 26, Haymarket. [n.d. c.1830.]
Hand-coloured etching. Plate 247 x 349mm. 9¾ x 13¾".
Satire on angling by Robert Seymour, or 'Shortshanks', who illustrated Dickens' 'The Pickwick Papers'. 'It uses Charles Cotton's famous dictum, "Be quiet and go a-Angling", as a continuation of the title. But the last thing the assembled anglers are doing is being quiet. It's Bedlam! Lines are crossed or tangled, a hooked dog is being drawn towards a landing net, one sport is following his rod into the water, and, to cap it all, a copy of Walton's 'Complete Angler' is floating away on the current' (David Beazley, 'Images of Angling').

James Greenacre. Sarah Gale
James Greenacre. Sarah Gale
[Anon., c.1837]
Etching with very fine hand-colouring, sheet 215 x 130mm (8½ x 5"). Very rare; 'Webster Collection' stamp verso.
James Greenacre (1785-1837), murderer, and his mistress Sarah Gale. Greenacre owned a large grocery shop on Old Kent Road, where he displayed political pamphlets. He was known for his radical opinions and as an associate of Arthur Thistlewood narrowly escaped arrest for involvement in the Cato Street conspiracy. After a spell in America Greenacre returned to London in 1835 and rumours began to circulate: he was accused of murdering a child, and of drugging a woman to procure an abortion, but both cases foundered for lack of evidence. In 1836 Greenacre advertised for a partner to help him exploit and develop the washing machine he had invented while in America, and a washerwoman named Hannah Brown agreed to go into business with him. On 24 December 1836 (the day before she was due to become his fifth wife) he murdered her, cut up the body and disposed of the pieces in various parts of London. On 24 March 1837 Greenacre and Gale were arrested in Kennington as they were preparing to set sail for America. Greenacre insisted Gale had not known about the murder, and she was transported to Australia, where she died in 1888. Greenacre, however, was hanged on 2 May 1837 in front of some 20,000 spectators at Newgate. He enjoyed posthumous celebrity: his head was examined by phrenologists, a waxwork effigy of him was displayed at Madame Tussauds, and plays about his life were performed at theatres.
