[Anon., c.1780]
Etching, platemark 160 x 100m (6 x 4"). Small margins.
Satire on a dissolute aristocrat, probably first issued in a magazine. A richly dressed young man, his hair tied in an elaborate queue, grasps a creditor, who holds a lengthy bill amounting to £500, by the shoulder and raises his stick at him; to the right, three other creditors look on in alarm, one holding a bill amounting to £2000; to the left, are two young women with hair dressed high one holding a lapdog; a monkey, dressed like the young man, squats on a chair aiming a gun at the creditors and two small dogs bark. On the wall behind are six pictures illustrating forms of self destruction: a huntsman is attacked by his hounds; a fallen rider is kicked by his horse; a man pulls down his own house on his head; a man sitting in front of a mirror places a gun in his mouth; two lovers on a bed are surprised by the woman's husband who stabs the man with his sword; two men fight a duel under the gaze of an owl, or parrot, on a stand while a body hangs from a gallows in the distance.

Sir Richard Arkwright, late of Cromford Derbyshire, The Eminent Inventor of the Machinery used in Spinning Cotton, by means of Rollers [...]
Painted by J. Wright Engraved by H. Meyer [c.1800]
Stipple engraving on india, platemark 225 x 150mm (9 x 6") very large margins.
Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-92), inventor of cotton-spinning machinery and cotton manufacturer. The archetypal self-made man, Arkwright went from a barber's apprentice in Bolton to a key figure in the proto-industrial north and midlands whose worth at his death was some £500,000. An ambitious inventor, Arkwright improved cotton manufacturing machinery, set up up the Cromford Cotton Mills in the then unexploited district of Cromford near Matlock (for a view of pre-Arkwright Cromford see ref.29386), and later ventured into hosiery knitting as well. Engraving after the portrait of c.1789-90 by Joseph Wright of Derby (private collection). Arkwright occupies an important place in Wright's work, not only in the portraits he painted of Arkwright and his family, but also because of the series of views he painted of the area where Arkwright established his empire. Not shown in this engraving is the model of the spinning frame Arkwright claimed to have invented, which in Wright's painting is on a table beside the sitter's left hand. Benedict Nicolson suggests that because aspersions had been cast on his qualifications as an inventor, Arkwright preferred to have this aspect of his work emphasised, rather than being painted with, say, a plan of his industrial empire- an achievement which was in no doubt. Nicolson, 'Joseph Wright of Derby: Painter of Light' (1968), vol. 1, pp.164-9. For Nicolson's monograph see ref. 27349.

The Army And Navy Club House, Pall Mall.
Drawn by J. Marchant. Engraved by H. Adlard.
Stationers' Almanack, 1853.
Steel engraving, sheet 250 x 460mm (9¾ x 18"). Trimmed within plate.
View of the Army and Navy Club on the corner of Pall Mall and St James's Square, formerly known as George Street. Men on horseback, horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians in foreground. Engraved for the Stationers' Almanack. Founded in August 1837, the year Queen Victoria acceded to the Throne, the Club was formed to meet the needs of the many army officers wanting to join a Service Club, most of which were already full. The great Duke of Wellington said he would become neither a patron nor a Member unless membership was also offered to officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Hence, the "Army Club" became the Army and Navy Club. The Stationers' Company had published the Stationers' Almanack since 1747, a single-sheet which consisted of calendar text set out beneath an engraved headpiece that recorded significant events of the preceeding year.
