Gibraltar from the Sea. [&] Gibraltar from the Mainland[?].
[Captain Peter William Hamilton, R.N., 1812-1868.]
[n.d., 1833-42.]
Pair of pencil sketches. Sheets 70 x 330mm, 2¾ x 13", and 90 x 330mm, 3½ x 13". Folded for inclusion in a sketchbook.
Hamilton's active naval career spanned 1833 to 1842 and, apart from his early stay in Jamaica, his postings make it hard to pinpoint the date of these sketches. As a young master's mate Hamilton served on board HMS Malabar in the Mediterranean 1835-36 and Iberia in 1836-7. He later served in the Royal Navy during the First Opium War (1839-42), seeing action at Hong Kong which he also recorded in his sketch album. He would have undoubtedly visited Gibraltar many times. From a sketchbook compiled by Hamilton.

''Half way between Carteia and the Spanish lines, runs into the sea a little river, collected from different springs about a mile up the country; on its pleasant banks several Spaniards have established themselves, and planted gardens of orange-trees, sweet canes, pomegranates, and evergreens; the eternal blossom of the oranges, and the advantage of angling in a river full of fish, induced a gentleman of the garrison to erect a little hut of canes under the shade of an enormous walnut, where the officers find beds, and the little requisites for passing an agreeable day in this amiable spot.'' From Francis Carter's two-volume 'A Journey from Gibraltar to Malaga' (1777). Carter (1741?-1783), a traveller and collector of coins, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries that same year, but died before completing his next work, a study of early Spanish printed books.

For Mr Tindal's Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England. [London, James & Paul Knapton, 1751.]
Engraved map. 380 x 590mm (15 x 23¼"). Very fine impression with original binding folds, narrow margins, as issued.
A map of Gibraltar marking the fortifications of both the British Garrison and those of the Spanish from the Thirteenth Siege of Gibraltar (1727). It is likely that the author of the map was Tindall himself: as Chaplain to the Fleet he had been posted to Gibraltar. Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. Illustrated With Medals, Plans of Battles, Towns, and Sieges', 1751.

Pair of extremely rare coloured aquatints, each approx. 280 x 360mm (11 x 14".) Both prints trimmed to image left and right, and trimmed close to platemark top and bottom.
Representations of the culmination of the Great Siege of Gibraltar on September 13th 1782. The Siege was part of an attempt by joint French and Spanish armies to capture Gibraltar from the British, whilst Britain was involved in the American War of Independence. The naval contingent of the offensive included a secret weapon, the 'floating battery', a type of warship of extremely heavy construction and carrying heavy armaments. However, the British practice of heating round shot before firing in order to set fire to the enemy vessels proved decisive, and nine of the ten floating batteries were destroyed. The siege continued into the spring of 1784 before the French and Spanish retreated without emulating the scale of this attack. After drawings by marine artist John Cleveley. Parker: 92c

" Walter Gilbey" Signature facsimile in margin. Published Jany 1st 1892 by J. & W. Vokins 14 & 16 Gt. Portland Str. London. W.

Sir Walter Gilbey [1831 - 1914] was an English agriculturist, wine-merchant and philanthropist. After serving in the Crimea he started a business at the Pantheon on Oxford Street importing Wines from South Africa. This grew and expanded allowing him the to pursue being a sportsman as well as a lover of horses, as referenced here by the painting on the wall and the copy of the Agricultural Gazette he reads. His legacy is remembered in the Gilbey Gallery at Bishop's Stortford's Museum. Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1835 - April 13, 1910) was a British painter. Orchardson was born in Edinburgh, 'Orchardson's wider popularity dates from 1881. To that year's Academy he sent the large 'On Board the Bellerophon,' which now hangs in the Tate Gallery. Its success with the public was great and instantaneous, and for ten or twelve years Orchardson's work was more eagerly looked for at the Academy than that of any one else…..The portrait of 'Sir Walter Gilbey' may fairly be called the painter's masterpiece, in this branch of art.'

Behind his chair stands a stout footman in livery, pleased with the improvement. After a scene from James Gillray's series (with 'Gentle Emetic', 'Taking Physic', 'Brisk - Cathartic' & 'Breathing a Vein'), all of which appear in Humphrey's shop window in Gillray's 'Very Slippy-Weather' (1808), alongside some of Gillray's more famous satires. Taking Physick.
[by James Gillray.]
Publish'd Feb.y 6.th 1800, by H. Humphrey, St James's Street, London.
Coloured etching. Sheet 265 x 195mm (10½ x 7¾"). Trimmed to printed border, long tear taped. Damaged.
An invalid, with unbuttoned breeches and nightcap, standing before a fire drinking medicine from a bowl, pulling a face. One in a series (with 'Gentle Emetic', 'Brisk - Cathartic', 'Breathing a Vein' & 'Charming - Well again), all of which appear in Humphrey's shop window in Gillray's 'Very Slippy-Weather' (1808), alongside some of Gillray's more famous satires. As the display celebrates Gillray's domestic arrangements (it includes two prints in which Hannah Humphrey, Gillray's partner and publisher, is recognisable) it is conceivable that the patient in this satire is Gillray himself. The series certainly had significance for the caricaturist. BM Satires 9584.
