Three quarter length portrait of a young Frederick II, (the great) King of Prussia (1712-86), wearing a chest plate, holding a baton with one hand and resting his other on top of a crown that rests on a cushion before him. Similar to the full length portrait made of him by Georg Paul Busch (fl.1713-56). Johann David Schleuen (1711-74) was a German printmaker and publisher, worked together with his three sons Johann Georg (1737-1799), Johann Friedrich (1739-1784) and Johann Wilhelm (1748-1812). Schleuen largely specialised in maps and topographical views.

A portrait of Frederick II King of Prussia (1712 - 1786). Bust-length, turned to the left with head almost facing front, wearing insignia of the Order of the Black Eagle. In an oval frame on a pedestal. Due to Frederick II's many military victories he became known as Frederick the Great. As well as his military prowess, Frederick II was a proponent of enlightened absolutism, modernised Prussian bureaucracy and reformed the judicial system. A great supporter of the French Enlightenment, Frederick often corresponded with its key figures, most notably Voltaire.

He wears robes lined with pale satin, a cloak thrown back over right elbow, tied with a rope ending in a large tassell, with the chain of the garter, his own hair curling over his shoulders. His sister Anne standing to right, holds out a wreath of laurel to her brother. She wears pearls in her hair and a cloak attached to left shoulder, hooked up at the waist.

An equestrian portrait of Frederick Louis (1707-51), son and heir apparent to George II until his early death. Dandridge's oil featured a figure believed to be Thomas Bloodworth, Frederick's Groom of the Bedchamber, standing behind the horse. Faber's mezzotint (CS 143) shows him, but this close copy omits him.

Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), son of Georg August (later George II) and father of George III. He first arrived in England in 1728 and was kept on a restricted income by his parents. He married Augusta of Saxe-Gotha in 1736 and died in 1751 before he could succeed to the throne. His son was crowned George III in 1760. Frederick assembled an important art collection, patronising artists such as Philip Mercier, and he also supported music-making, in 1732 sponsoring the Opera of the Nobility (a rival to the Haymarket).

The Swiss painter Barthélémy du Pan (1712-63), who arrived in England in 1743 and obtained Royal Patronage soon after, painted the picture on which this print is based in 1746. Very rare framed mezzotint on silk. Silk 455 x 355mm (18 x 14"). Frame 530 x 430mm (20¾ x 17"). Slightly warped but very good condition considering it is on silk! Unexamined outside of frame. Any silk engravings of this period in very good condition are extremely scarce.
Three quarter portrait of Frederick (Friedrich) Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1711 -1763), wearing armour, cloak, sash and holding a baton. He was a member of the House of Hohenzollern and Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and eldest son of Georg Frederick Karl, nominal Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth-Kulmbach (1688-1735), by his wife Dorothea of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck (1685-1761). His name has been added to the official name of the University of Erlangen, which he founded in 1743: the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) (English: University of Erlangen-Nuremberg). Gottfried Eichler the Younger (1715-1770) was an engraver active in Augsburg and son of German painter and draughtsman Gottfried the Elder (1677-1759).

Half porrtait in profile, set in a roundel of Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786). Due to Frederick II's many military victories he became known as Frederick the Great. As well as his military prowess, Frederick II was a proponent of enlightened absolutism, modernised Prussian bureaucracy and reformed the judicial system. A great supporter of the French Enlightenment, Frederick often corresponded with its key figures, most notably Voltaire.

Frederick II of Prussia sits on a bench, having been defeated at Nimburg in the battle of Kollin. He is surrounded by his generals and three children wrestling in the foreground. A church and other buildings from the city can be seen in the background. The Battle of Kolín on 18 June 1757 saw 44,000 Austrians under Count von Daun defeat 32,000 Prussians under Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War. The Prussians lost the battle and nearly 14,000 men, the Austrians lost 8,000 men. Friedrich II was a brilliant military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe.

In the Battle of Leuthen or Lissa, fought on 5 December 1757, Frederick II used maneuver and terrain to decisively defeat a much bigger Austrian army under Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine, thus ensuring Prussian control of Silesia during the Seven Years' War. Friedrich II was a brilliant military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe.

Frederick William Nicholas Charles (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl), who became Frederick III (1831 – 1888), German Emperor and King of Prussia, for 99 days in 1888 during the Year of the Three Emperors. The only son of Emperor William I, and was raised in his family's tradition of military service. Although celebrated as a young man for his leadership and successes during the Second Schleswig, Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars, he nevertheless professed a hatred of warfare, and was praised by friends and enemies alike for his humane conduct. Following the unification of Germany in 1871 his father, then King of Prussia, became the German Emperor, and on William's death at the age of 90 on 9 March 1888, the throne passed to Frederick, having by then been the Crown Prince for twenty-seven years. Frederick was suffering from cancer of the larynx and died on 15 June 1888, aged 57, following unsuccessful medical treatments for his condition.

Frederick William I (1688 – 1740) of the House of Hohenzollern, King of Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg (as Frederick William II) from 1713 until his death. Known popularly as the 'Soldatenkönig' (the soldier king), he married Sophia Dorothea of Hanover, daughter of George I of England, and transformed Prussia into a military power. He was father of Frederick II ('the Great'). One of several large equestrian mezzotints by Augsburg-based artist Georg Philipp Rugendas I (1666-1742), whose portraits and genre scenes were much sought-after for the decoration of palaces and large houses.

Frederick William (1620-1688) was the Elector of Brandenburg and the Duke of Prussia from 1640 until his death. He was of the House of Hohenzollern and was known as the Great Elector because of his military and political skill. He was instrumental in the strong position that Prussia held in the post-Westphalia political order or north-central Europe, due to his understanding of the importance of trade and its vigorous promotion.

Frederick William IV of Prussia (1795 - 1861), the eldest son and successor of Frederick William III of Prussia, reigned as King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861. He gained military experience by serving in the army during the War of Liberation against Napoleon in 1814, though he was an indifferent soldier. He is in military dress, with a battle being fought behind him. Publisher's blindstamp lower right of image.
