A Monumentall Print for the Rebellion in Scotland in 1746
A Monumentall Print for the Rebellion in Scotland in 1746 Didicated to all Loyall Subjects of Great Brittain & Ireland.
[n.d., c.1750.]
Etching with engraving, 280 x 175mm. 11 x 7". Trimmed to image, glued to album page.
Simon Fraser, 11th Baron Lovat (1667? - 1747) was a Jacobite executed at the age of eighty for high treason in the 1745 Rising, after a lifetime of devious intrigue between Jacobites and Hanoverians. A huge crowd attended his execution, the last on Tower Hill. Lovat is surrounded by four medallion portraits of fellow Jacobites who were likewise held prisoner in the Tower, the title set into a cartouche flanked by the severed heads of the executed Jacobite rebels Francis Townley and George Fletcher. This is one of several copies based on the 1746 print by William Hogarth and published in the aftermath of the trials of leading Jacobites. Hogarth etched Lovat's portrait at an inn in St. Albans on his way to trail and eventual execution.

Colonel Sir Augustus Simon Frazer, K.C.B, (1776-1835). A month before his fourteenth birthday he was admitted as a Gentleman Cadet into the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. In 1793 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and in December he joined the army in Flanders, then under the command of HRH the Duke of York. He was promoted Lieutenant in January 1794 and saw action in the Flanders campaign, returning to England with the army in May 1795 when he was appointed to the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA). In September 1799, now a Captain-Lieutenant, he again went on active service, to North Holland, returning to England in November. He became a captain in 1803 and was given command of a troop of RHA which, in 1807 he took to South America where he commanded the Artillery of the expedition against Buenos Aires. Promoted Major in June 1811 he went to the Peninsula in November 1812, and it is from this date that the letters begin. In April 1813 Frazer was appointed to command the Horse Artillery of the army and as such saw action at Salamanca, Osma, Vitoria, St Sebastian, the crossings of the Bidassoa, Nive and Adour. He was severely wounded at the siege of Bayonne on 27 February 1814 but was back for the final battle of Toulouse in April which brought hostilities against the French to a close. He then returned to England, receiving the Peninsular Medal with two clasps and KCB, and appointed to command of the Artillery in the eastern district. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1814. When war with France broke out again on Napoleon's escape from Elba Sir Augustus joined the allied army in Flanders, under the Duke of Wellington, in March 1815 and resumed command of the Horse Artillery, the post he held during the battle of Waterloo. On return to England he was appointed Commander HQ RHA, Woolwich until promoted Colonel in January 1825. Subsequently he was Assistant Inspector of the Ordnance Carriage Department, and finally Director of the Royal Laboratory, a position he held till his death in 1835. Frazer was a prolific letter writer and the letters contained in a book written to his wife, Lady Emma Frazer and to his wife's sister and her husband, Major and Mrs Moore. They give a fascinating account of the stirring events of the time. 140 of them were written during the Peninsular campaign and a further 41 during the Waterloo campaign.

Charlot.e Zethen, design et fecit [James Gillray].
Pub.d April 10thth 1792, by H. Humphrey, No 18 Old Bond Street.
Coloured stipple. Sheet 27- x 210mm (10½ x 8¼"). Trimmed within plate, patched hole, ink stain from Collector's mark verso, some staining.
Seated portrait of Princess Frederica Charlotte of Prussia (1767-1820), who married Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, the year before. While this is a straight forward portrait rather than Gillray's usual satire, the Duchess was also the subject in one of Gillray's famous 'suppressed plates'. His 'Fashionable Contrasts; - or - The Duchess's little Shoe yeilding to the Magnitude of the Duke's Foot' showed the feet and ankles of the Duke and Duchess of York, in an obviously copulatory position, the Duchess's feet drawn very small. This satirised the sycophancy of the press at the Duchess's arrival, who commented on the daintiness of her feet.

Published 20th April, 1825. by G. Atkinson, Brighton.

H.R.H.Frederick Augustus Duke of York & Albany [1763-1827] was appointed colonel of the 2nd Horse Grenadier Guards (now 2nd Life Guards) in 1782, and promoted major-general and appointed colonel of the Coldstream Guards in 1784. He was created Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster on 29 November 1784 and became a member of the Privy Council.Famed as the 'The Grand Old Duke of York' Frederick was the second son of George III. He was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, between 1798 and 1809. Unsuccessful in the field during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, he is better remembered for putting down corruption in the administration of the army. In 1809, he was dismissed from office after revelations that his mistress Mary Anne Clarke had been selling army commissions. This portrait shows his stolling on the Horse Guards Parade.

[Frederick. Duke of York and Mary Anne Charke] They Have Been Weighed in the Balance, and are found Wanting.
[Frederick. Duke of York and Mary Anne Charke] They Have Been Weighed in the Balance, and are found Wanting.
Flagelantes [Charles Williams] inv.t.
Pub.d March 1809 by Walker No. 7 Cornhill.
Fine coloured etching. 250 x 350mm (9¾ x 13¾"). Small margins.
A large pair of scales, the arm reading 'England expects every man to do his duty', weigh on one side by Mary Anne Clarke, supported by Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle, and on other three lawyers and General Clavering (with Spencer Perceval adding papers to the scales). The fulcrum is Frederick, Duke of York, standing on the back of William Adam. John Bull watches from behind. This satire relates to the cash-for-commissions scandal involving the Duke of York and Clarke, his mistress, and specifically on the votes exonerating him. Wardle brought the motion for the removal of the Duke, but it was defeated by Perceval's amendment; eventually Perceval's resolution acquitting the Duke of personal corruption was carried. Clarke calls for the John Bull, carrying the 'Vox Populi', to lend his weight, reflecting public opinion. York did in fact resign the same month this print was published- despite the motion passed by the Commons, this was the only way to avoid a renewal of the allegations. Etching by 'Flagelantes', which BM Satires believes to be a pseudonym for Charles Williams, although many of the attributions to Williams in BM Satires are now questioned.
BM Satires 11269.

The Queen called him 'cousin Mumpellgart', and in 1597 allowed his election to the Order of the Garter, but the actual ceremony of his investiture did not take place until November, 1603, when the Garter was conferred on him in his own capital city of Stuttgart by a special embassy from James I.
