Two seascapes from a set of 'Marine Studies' by François Louis Thomas Francia (1772-1839), watercolour painter and printmaker. An associate of Thomas Girtin, like many watercolourists of the early 19th century Francia put much of his energy into teaching (his students included R.P. Bonington) and produced drawing manuals. While beginning as a landscape painter after moving from France to England, he increasingly turned to coast and river scenery for subject matter, as here.

One of the signatories is Robert Hooper (1773 - 1835), medical writer. After a course of medical study in London he was appointed apothecary to the Marylebone workhouse infirmary. He entered at Pembroke College, Oxford, on 24 Oct. 1796, graduated B.A. in 1803, M.A. and M.B. in 1804. He was admitted licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians on 23 Dec. 1805. Settling in Savile Row, he lectured there on the practice of medicine for many years to large classes. He made a special study of pathology, and formed a large collection of illustrative specimens. While carrying on an extensive practice, he was a most industrious writer, and his books had a large sale. Revised editions of several of them continue in sale. He retired from practice in 1829, having made a fortune, and lived at Stanmore.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is an independent professional body for to promoting standards in surgical care (including dentistry) in England and Wales. It is situated at Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. The college originated in 1540, when Henry VIII of England joined the Worshipful Company of Barbers (incorporated 1462) and the Guild of Surgeons to form the Company of Barber-Surgeons. In 1745 the surgeons separated from the barbers to form the Company of Surgeons. In 1800 the Company was granted a Royal Charter as the Royal College of Surgeons in London; the name changed in 1843 to Royal College of Surgeons of England. Engraving of the College coat of arms flanked by two figures on a pedestal by John Strongitharm. Sir George Francis Seymour (1787-1870), captain of HMS Fortunée and HMS Leonidas during the War of 1812, for which he was made a CB. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief Pacific Station in 1844, Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station in 1851 and Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth in 1856. He was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet in 1866.[

Francis, Duke of Guise (1519-63), French soldier and politician. Husband of Anna d'Este and uncle of Mary, Queen of Scots, his military triumphs included defending Metz against Emperor Charles V in 1552 and capturing Calais from England in 1558. In religion Guise was strongly Catholic, which served him well during the reign of Francis II but after the king's death, the favour that regent Catherine de' Medici showed towards Protestants led Guise to become part of the 'triumvirate' defending the Catholic cause. The disputes between Protestants and Catholics eventually led not just to Guise's assassination by a Huguenot, but the French Wars of Religion (1562-98). From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

After the Holy Roman Emperors ceased to be crowned by the popes, their coronation ceremonies took place here (1562–1792). Each plate has title and description in both German and Latin.

Nine of 14 plates from Walter William May's 'Series of Fourteen Sketches Made During the Voyage up Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin' with wrappers, list of over 240 subscribers and descriptions of the plates. Sir Edward Belcher led five ships to the Arctic in the largest and last naval search for Sir John Franklin and the crews of the 'Erebus' and 'Terror', missing from an earlier expedition seeking the Northwest Passage. Though they were unable to rescue Franklin they rescued the crew of HMS Investigator under the command of Robert McClure which had become stuck during an earlier rescue expedition. Four out of the five vessels were abandoned in pack ice, for which Belcher was court-martialled, but acquitted. Plates 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. 14.

A three-quarter length portrait of Benjamin Franklin, holding his book on electricity, a lighting bolt hitting a village behind. We believe this is a 19th century later state of McArdell's mezzotint, without artist's and engraver's signatures and without the wart on Franklin's cheek. Possibly French.
