Plate from 'Recueil de cent estampes représentant différentes nations du Levant', a set of one hundred plates depicting the costume of the Levant, based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis Charles de Ferriol, ambassador from the court of Versailles to the Sublime Porte from 1699 to 1710. The work had a profound effect on how the European conception of Turkey. After Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737), the Flemish-French painter, who Ferriol brought with him to Istanbul at the age of eighteen. Ferriol commissioned at least a hundred paintings from Vanmour, which served as the source for the engravings in the 'Recueil' and are now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

An Arab stands before this camel, rifle over his shoulder, looking down at something coming out of the ground. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) began etching with his twin, Maurice, and exhibited at The Royal Academy aged 13. In 1908 Maurice committed suicide and Edward, traumatised, stopped etching. In 1922 an appreciative article about the Detmolds in the Print Collector's Quarterly inspiring Edward to return to printmaking. An edition of 'The Arabian Nights' illustrated by Detmold was published in 1924.

Four Arab horsemen holding spears. Title in English and French; numbered 'Pl XV' lower right. From a series of prints depicting the customs, manners, costume etc. of Turkey and Egypt, drawn and engraved by Richard Dalton (1715? - 1791). Dalton, who was trained as an artist, went to Rome to pursue his studies, and in 1749 travelled with Roger Kynaston and John Frederick to Naples and Sicily, where they joined a party consisting of James Caulfeild, Earl of Charlemont, Francis Pierpoint Burton, and others. From thence Dalton accompanied Lord Charlemont on his tour to Constantinople/Istanbul, Greece, and Egypt. Dalton managed to obtain the position of librarian to George III. He was subsequently appointed keeper of the pictures and antiquary to his majesty. He was one of the original members of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1765, and became their treasurer. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1767. 'Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt, with the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, from Drawings made on the Spot.' was published in London in 1791 and is all three of Dalton's Tours in one volume. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) and his twin Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were twins and child protegés who worked very closely together until C.M. Detmold committed suicide in 1908. Traumatised, Edward produced only one etching in the next fifteen years, returning to the art only in 1923.

A moored dhow traditional Arab sailing vessel with its owner sitting on the shore. A drawing from life by a skilful amateur artist from a sketch book of scenes on a voyage of the ship 'Elphinstone'. She was a sloop in the service of the Honourable East India Company launched c.1824 which travelled to the Mediterranean, around the southern tip of Africa and on to the East Indies and Australia. The identity of the artist who travelled on board the Elphinstone drawing the different landscapes and scenes he saw is not ascertained. The sketch book is inscribed in ink with the initials 'W.B.' on the front endpaper.

A caricature portrait of General Arabin (1750-1828) in uniform with epaulettes, sword, and gorget and a spotted foulard or nightcap on his head. His head is turned, showing a Jewish profile and broad ogling grin. The BM records that Arabin was 'in Angelo's opinion the best amateur actor in the Pic Nics (see BMSat 9916, &c), and outstanding in anecdote, song, and imitation'.

The voyage included a one month visit in the Sandwich Islands, with time spent in Hawaii, Maui and Oahu, as well as visits to Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Montevideo, Mauritius, New South Wales, and the Caroline Islands. 'The Uranie, with a crew of 125 men, entered the Pacific from the West to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. Arago was the artist of the expedition which visited most notably Australia, the Hawaiian Islands, Tonga, and Tierra del Fuego. The original ship, wrecked off the Falkland Islands, was replaced by the Physicienne which visited Rio de Janeiro.

François Jean Dominique Arago (1786-1853), French mathematician, astronomer, whose recalculation of the Paris Meridian are commemorated by the 135 Arago medallions set into the ground through Paris. In the 1848 Revolution he joined the Provisional Government, in which he was responsible for abolishing flogging in the French Navy and then succeeded in procuring the abolition of slavery in the French colonies. In May he briefly served as Prime Minister of France, until the collective resignation of the Executive Power Commission in June. When Napoleon III took power in 1851 an oath of allegiance from all its functionaries, was required: Arago sent in his resignation as astronomer at the Bureau des Longitudes rather than take the oath, but Louis-Napoleon refused it and made "an exception in favour of a savant whose works had thrown lustre on France, and whose existence the government would regret to embitter."

Eugene Aram (d.1759), murderer and philologist, with extensive letterpress biography, as published in the 'Wonderful Magazine', which specialised in stories of eccentric and remarkable individuals. Aram was a considerably learned man, self-taught for the most part, who worked as a schoolteacher for much of his life. In 1758 the discovery of what was believed to be the skeleton of Daniel Clarke, a shoemaker from Knaresborough who disappeared in 1745 shortly after coming into money, led to Aram being named as an accomplice to Clarke's murder. Aram was tried in York in 1759, and he and the other defendant, a linen weaver named Houseman, accused each other. All of the evidence was circumstantial and Houseman turned crown's evidence in return for acquittal. Aram defended himself, and the letterpress to this print quotes Aram's speech, with its philosophic argument against the circumstantial evidence. Nevertheless a conviction was obtained and Aram was hanged at Knavesmire in 1759. The letterpress concludes by wondering how 'a man with abilities so superior, could think of embruing his hands in the blood of a fellow-creature'. While Aram's achievements as a linguist have subsequently been discredited, he was to be immortalized in Thomas Hood's ballad 'The Dream of Eugene Aram' (1829) and Edward Bulwer's eponymous novel of 1832.

Engraving after one of the famous series of 'The Battle of Alexander' by Charles Le Brun (1619-90), which invited comparison between the ancient ruler and the French monarch Louis XIV. When the engraver Girard Audran (1640-1703) returned to Paris after a period of study in Rome at the studio of Carlo Maratti, he was engaged to engrave these four enormous pictures, which took him six years and for which he was paid over 10,000 francs. The series is the masterpiece of an important engraver, and earned him admission to the Académie Royale.

Arbury Hall, the seat of the Newdegate family and the ancestral home of Viscount and Vicountess Daventry, Warwickshire. It is an Elizabethan house, built on the site of a 12th century Augustinian Priory; it was then transformed in the 18th century to become the finest example of Gothic Revival architecture in the country, at the time.

Plate 8 of a series of nine portraits of the Archangels engraved by Crispijn de Passe the Elder (1564-1637) after Maarten de Vos (1532 - 1603). Scarce etching, verso Dr Stukely & Baynham 954 in ink. 340 x 300mm (13¼ x 11¾"). Thread margins and some creasing. Time staining.
A warrior on horseback with his bow and arrow drawn. Both the soldier and horse are clad in scaled body armour and the soldiers wears a plumed helmet with his shield and quiver slung across his back. Debris and potsherds litter the foreground. Italian school.

A portrait of jockey Frederick James Archer (1857-1886), known as the Tin Man, Champion Jockey for 13 consecutive years. Taller than the average jockey he kept a rigorous diet: in October 1886 he fasted for three days to reach race weight and shortly after fell ill. In a high fever and hallucinating, he shot himself, aged only 29.
