A fat elderly man in hunting-cap has dismounted under an oak-tree to have his fortune told by a ragged old gipsy woman, who reads his hand. Meanwhile another gipsy, kneeling beside him, with a child on her shoulders, picks his pocket. Behind to left stands a groom in livery, gaping at the fortune told him by a pretty girl. Behind him a boy leans from a tree to rifle through the portmanteau on his horse. The scene is the edge of a wood; in the distance two huntsmen are galloping. After Brownlow North (1778 - 1829), amateur draughtsman of satires, by James Gillray (1756 - 1815).

Unusual locally-published print of the well-known Cheltenham personality Hannah Forty (1744-1816), who pumped water for the visitors to the spa from 1772 until the first day of 1816. A monument to her exists in Cheltenham Minster St. Mary's. When George III visited Cheltenham he quipped to her: 'Mrs Forty, you and your husband together make eighty'. This bon mot is often quoted to prove the king had a sence of humour, just not a very good one.

Lady Elizabeth Foster (1757-1824), novelist and friend of Georgina Cavendish who lived with her and the Duke of Devonshire in a ménage à trois for 25 years, becoming duchess when Georgina died in 1806. Downman executed a series of portraits of women who had acted in the Richmond House Theatre, the 3rd Duke of Richmond's private theatre in Richmond House, Whitehall. Regarded as one of the grandest houses of the period, it burned down in 1791, after which the Duke concentrated on his country estate, Goodwood. First published by M. Lawson in 1788.

James Foster (1697-1753) was an English Baptist minister; he was a nonconformist. He attended Joseph Hallett's Presbyterian academy where he met other radicals, including Hubert Stogdon, and achieved a reputation for rejecting human authority in matters of religious controversy, belief, and practical piety, privileging what he believed to be the indubitable consequences of reason and argument over passive faith and received wisdom.

A half-length portrait in oval of Major Henry Foubert (d.1743), in white wig and breastplate under his jacket. Arriving in England in 1669 as a Huguenot refugee with his father Solomon, Foubert fought with the Duke of Schomberg at the Battle of the Boyne and was promoted to major for bravery. He is identified in the key of Jan Wyck's view of the battle. When Solomon Foubert died, Henry took over his riding academy, teaching the princes. It is near to 'Foubert's Place', a walkway between today's Carnaby Street and Regent Street.

Social satire, oval design: an old military officer with a wooden leg describes his campaigns to two cronies. He is seated in a chair (right) in profile, wearing regimentals and sword, his wig with long loosely twisted pigtail queue. He has a wooden leg and holds a map or plan taken from the wall, showing it to a stout man sitting on his right, who looks at it through spectacles. The third man standing behind, his left arm on the back of the soldier's chair, looks over their shoulders at the map. At their feet a small dog lies asleep. Through the open door (left) a man is seen dancing along while he plays a fiddle. After Henry William Bunbury (1750 - 1811).

A complete and matching set of the founder's portraits from the 'History of the University of Cambridge' (16 plates) and 'History of the University of Oxford' (33), published 1814 & 1815. Very unusual to find both universities bound together. None of the plates are dated, as usual.

The Foundling Hospital in Guildford Street. It was founded in 1742 by Captain Thomas Coram, whose friends included William Hogarth (later a governor of the institution) and Handel (who donated an organ to the chapel and gave performances of the 'Messiah' on it, raising £7,000). Published in Ackermann's famous work, the 'Microcosm of London', the figures were drawn by the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin. A rare uncoloured example.

The text exhorts 'graduates' leaving London's Foundling Hospital to lead a virtuous and industrious life. The allegorical vignette shows Charity standing in the centre embracing infants, Faith seated at right reading from a bible, and Hope standing with anchor at left. A banner which reads "But the greatest of these in Charity" is supported by two putti above. After Thomas Stothard (1755 - 1834). The Foundling Hospital was founded in 1739 in London, north of Great Ormond Street and west of Gray's Inn Lane, by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram. It was a children's home established for the 'education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children.'

Fountains Abbey, the largest and best preserved Cistercian houses in England. Founded in 1132 it lasted for over 400 years, until Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. It is now part of the Studley Royal Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This view was published the year after William Aislabie (1700-81) bought the Fountains estate for £16,000 and added it to the Studley estate that he had inherited, expanding his father's water garden around the abbey.

Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, duc de Belle-Isle (1684-1791), the French general and statesman. In 1758, King Louis XV made him Secretary of State of War, a position that Belle-Isle held until his death. He also had an interest in literature and was elected a member of the French National Academy in 1740.

The first has a roof shaped like a pagoda; the second is driver by eccentric amateur actor Robert ''Romeo'' Coates (1772-1848), who is dressed as Lothario, with three huge feathers in his hat. A huge crowd wave and cheer. A satire of the Four-in-Hand Club and their desire for publicity.

Poet John Dryden (1631 - 1700), physician and poet Sir Samuel Garth (1661 - 1719), architect Sir John Vanbrugh (1664 - 1726), and essayist, dramatist and politician Sir Richard Steele (1672 - 1729); their names on scrolls under the upper pair and on inscription space under the lower pair. From a set of six plates, 'Poets and Philosophers of England', each having four oval portraits; by mezzotinter and publisher John Simon (c.1675 - 1751).
