Mrs. Fitzherbert.
Mrs. Fitzherbert.
Noble sculp.
Published by Alexr. Hogg at the King's Arms No.16 Paternoster Row, Sep. 1. 1786.
Engraving, 175 x 110mm. 7 x 4¼". A fine impression with margins.
Maria Anne Fitzherbert (née Smythe) (1756 - 1837), famous beauty, and mistress of George IV. A woman of tact and discretion, Mrs Fitzherbert was one of the great beauties of her day. Although a Catholic and a widow she was persuaded to marry the Prince of Wales in a secret ceremony in 1785. The marriage was illegal. The Prince did not have the King's approval and the heir could not marry a Catholic without forfeiting the right to the throne. Mrs Fitzherbert was condemned to a life of deception as the Prince's 'mistress'. She patiently maintained this position for almost a decade after George's official marriage to Caroline of Brunswick in 1795. For the 'New Lady's Magazine' 1786.

J.S Gillray inv. & f.t.
Pub.d April 22.d 1805. by H. Humphrey, S.t James's Street.

Mrs. Fitzherbert as a stout angel, carrying Mary (Minney) Seymour, daughter of Lord Hugh Seymour, from Brighton towards a burlesqued altar, surrounded with cherub's heads with the faces of politicians, including Sheridan, Norfolk, Fox, Burdett, and Derby. A satire on a legal struggle (not decided till 14 June 1806) between Mrs. Fitzherbert and the Seymour family for the guardianship of Mary (Minney) Seymour, daughter of Lord Hugh Seymour, who had died in 1801. It has been suggested that Mary, born in 1798, was the daughter of Mrs Fitzerbert and George IV. She was one of the two principal beneficiaries in Mrs Fitzherbert's will.

A Paris, chez Blin, Imprimeur en Taille-Douce, Place Maubert, N.º 17, vis-à-vis la Rue des 3 Portes A. P. D. R. [n.d., 1786-92].
Rare aquatint with fine printed colour, in engraved text. 245 x 165mm (9½ x 6½"), large margins. Split in bottom platemark taped.
A scene of the Duke of Berwick accepting the surrender of the Austrian-English-Dutch army after the Battle of Almansa, 25 April 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession. James FitzJames (1670-1734) was the illegitimate son of James II by Arabella Churchill, born and raised in France. In 1687 his father made him Duke of Berwick and Governor of Portsmouth, although the Glorious Revolution prevented him taking up the post, joining his father in exile. After the Battle of the Boyne he joined the French army and showed similar abilities to his uncle, the Duke of Marlborough. His victory at Almansa was described by Frederick the Great as the most impressive battle of the century. Berwick was decapitated by a cannonball at the Siege of Philippsburg in 1734. From 'Portraits des grands hommes, femmes illustres et sujets mémorables de France', a series of colour prints published 1786-1792.

This engraving was published in 'The Oxford Magazine' opposite a text claiming that the image does not represent 'any particular person; it is a sort of general character at the west-end of town'. London, Published Nov.r 1, 1822, by S. & I. Fuller, 34, Rathbone Place.
Coloured aquatint. 230 x 280mm (9 x 11"). Trimmed within plate.
A scene in the life of Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton KG (1663-90), the illegitimate son of Charles II by Barbara Villiers, Countess of Castlemaine. Grafton, a keen boxer, apparently used to challenge hackney coachmen to a fight, offering a guinea for his fare or nothing depending on the outcome. Here he is shown with a Thames waterman, who, having agreed to fight the Duke on a coal lighter, is leaving him stranded. Published in Pyne's 'The World in Miniature', the portrait of the Duke seems unfair: the reddness and lines of his face mark him as considerably older than the 27 years he attained before his death at the Siege of Cork.

The History of the Flagellants,

London: Printed for Fielding & Walker, No. 20, Paternoster-Row. MDCCLXXVII [1777].
First Edition, second issue. 4to, in fine 19th century full morocco gilt binding, t.e.g., by F. Bedford; pp. (vi), including half title, title, list of illustration and contents, + 340; 4 engraved plates & four engraved vignettes, as called for. Occasional spotting.
A fine example of Delolme’s provocative English adaptation of Abbé Boileau’s highly controversial history of flagellation, first published 1700. It traces the practice throughout history and literature, with its uses as punishment, religious self-discipline, private atonement or erotic practice. The illustrations include devils whipping men, Henry II's penitance for the death of Thomas Becket, and Bernadine of Sienna whipping a bare-breasted woman to extinguish her ardour. This scarce second issue has an errata on page 332.
