An allegorical plate, representing Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand (1609-41) travelling to Italy on a ship being pushed by mer-people. His father. Philip II of Spain, had him made Archbishop of Toledo aged 10 and a cardinal soon after (although he was never actually ordained). This allowed him an income while serving as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and a military commander during the Thirty Years' War which saw Spain lose control of much of the Spanish Netherlands.

An equestrian portrait of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (1609-41), son of Philip III of Spain, at the Battle of Nördlingen. He served as a general in the Thirty Years' War, the Eighty Years' War and the Franco-Spanish War, remaining undefeated. An early example, published by Pontius. The example in the British Museum (1871,1209.3425) has 'et excudit' removed. The painting is in the Museo del Prado (P01687).

Ferdinand VII (1784-1833), twice king of Spain (1808; 1813-33). Overthrown by Napoleon in 1808, the French Emperor acknowledged him as king again in 1813. Towards the end of his life he married Maria Christina, with whom he had a daughter, Isabella, who subsequently became queen. From a series of portraits by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860).

Hand coloured etching. Very rare. Printed area: 230 x 325mm (9 x 12¾"). Tear taped on reverse, unexamined out of frame.
A satire depicting Ferdinand VII of Spain (1784 - 1833), leading 'Liberty' in chains to the shrine of 'Our Lady of Loretto', who stands to the left holding a small child in her arms. Her dress is inscribed 'This drapery was work'd & presented to the holy virgin by the proud King of Spain in gratitude for his miraculous Restoration to his Throne & Kingdom. 1814'. After being overthrown by Napoleon in 1808, Ferdinand was forced to abdicate, with Napoleon choosing his brother Joseph Bonaparte as king of Spain. Uprisings broke out throughout the country, marking the beginning of the Peninsular War. Napoleon kept Ferdinand under guard in France for six years at the Chateau of Valençay, until 11th December 1813 when he signed the Treaty of Valençay, which acknowledged Ferdinand VII as king of Spain once again.

When Voltaire was banned from Paris by Louis XV, he turned to Geneva, however they passed a law that banned theatrical performances and so in 1758 he crossed the French border to Ferney. Voltaire's reign over Ferney saw the town expand rapidly.

Laurence Shirley, 4th Earl Ferrers (1720 - 1760) was hung at Tyburn for the murder of his steward John Johnson who was attempting to collect money due to Ferrers's estranged wife. A ring of soldiers keep back the spectators, while others watch from wooden stands built to the left and right. Ferrers was driven to Tyburn, dressed in a silver embroidered suit, in his own coach drawn by six horses.

A young fiddler, wearing hat with a bow, a matching bow hanging from the end of neck of his violin. The BM example has a note identifying him as Hugh Massey. After Marcellus Laroon (c.1650-1702), from the series 'The Cryes of the City of London Drawne after the Life', first published by Pierce Tempest in 1688. This example has the added plate number '24'.
