[Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton] Whistling Dalmahoy and the Shads.
W.H Pyne del.t. Smart & Hunt sculp.t.
London, Published Nov.r 1, 1822, by S. & I. Fuller, 34, Rathbone Place.
Coloured aquatint. 230 x 280mm (9 x 11"). Trimmed within plate.
A scene in the life of Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton KG (1663-90), the illegitimate son of Charles II by Barbara Villiers, Countess of Castlemaine. Grafton, a keen boxer, apparently used to challenge hackney coachmen to a fight, offering a guinea for his fare or nothing depending on the outcome. Here he is shown with a Thames waterman, who, having agreed to fight the Duke on a coal lighter, is leaving him stranded. Published in Pyne's 'The World in Miniature', the portrait of the Duke seems unfair: the reddness and lines of his face mark him as considerably older than the 27 years he attained before his death at the Siege of Cork. The interior of a barn, with a man carrying in a bundle of hay in for his sheep, talking to another who stands by the doorway, through which a snow-covered tree can be seen. This seems to be a colouring guide: it is printed on a progress proof of Robert Freebairn's ''A View of the Bay of Naples, The City of Pozzuoli, the Elysian Fields, the Stygean Lake, and Cape of Miseno'', with the etched outline before the addition of aquatint, so not a commercial printing.

Impressive and vibrant view looking up Fleet Street and Ludgate Hill towards St Paul's Cathedral. The street id thronged with people and vehicles of all kinds. By Luigi Kasimir (1881 - 1962), world renowned Austrian-born etcher and painter, born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the coloured etching. Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the coloured etching. Prior to this, prints were usually hand coloured with the colour being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir first did a sketch- usually in pastel. He then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the colour on the plate, all done by hand. The finished etching is a true original.
