A middle-aged dandy made an April Fool. He stands, waistcoat and trousers bulging, waiting in vain at a country turnstile while two young women, obviously the senders of the letter in his hand, peer over the wall. This print was advertised as 'newly published' by the Monthly Literary Advertiser May 1838.

A fish-faced man looks at a menu in a restaurant. This satire is an early example of product placement: on the wall behind is an advert for 'Charles Wright's Champagne', one of several references to the brand found in Hunt's satires. The cheapness of the champagne led critics to allege that it was not of French origin, causing Wright to sue. The first state: Thomas Mclean reissued this plate in 1827.

By Antonio Tempesta (c.1555-1630) painter, draughtsman, and etcher from Florence, he was a pupil of Stradanus. He was active in Rome around 1580, with his earliest dated prints appearing in 1589. Published by Nicolas van Aelst (c.1550's- 1613) engraver, printer, print dealer and print publisher, from Brussels, working in Rome.

Oblong folio, contemporary half morocco gilt, with marbled boards, red morocco gilt title label on front board; lithographed illustrated title pasted on original wrapper; 7 tinted lithographs on thick paper, mounted on stubs, each sheet approx. 355 x 540mm (14 x 21¼"). Binding worn, plates with some surface soiling and spotting, two plates with bottom right corner knocked.
The plates are: Pope, Minnow, Perch, Gudgeon; Barbel, Bream, Chub; Eel, Roach, Dace, Bleak; Tench, Carp; Trout; Graylng; Pike. The set of plates by Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-81). As the plates were issued loose in wrappers, complete sets are unusual and very scarce.

Hand coloured soft gound etching and aquatint with very large margins. Watermarked paper: 'J. Whatman. 1801'. Platemark: 185 x 245mm (7¼ x 9¾").
Plate 85 from John Augustus Atkinson's (1775 - 1831) 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs and Amusements of the Russians', 1803 - 1804. The scene depicts Russian fishermen and women on a row boat on the Neva. According to the text these vessels 'serve the fishmongers at once for dwelling houses, shops and fishponds... the lower part of the bark is divided into different wells for the keeping [of] all kinds of fresh-water fish'. John Augustus Atkinson was a British etcher, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He spent 1784 - 1801 in Russia with his uncle, James Walker. After returning to London in 1801, he made prints after his works, of Russian subjects, and made outline etchings for other artists. He also executed paintings on military subjects and battles.

Joseph Simpson (1879 - 1939), painter and etcher of portraits and sporting subjects. Simpson was born in Carlisle and studied art at Glasgow School of Art. He became a close friend of D.Y. Cameron and was elected RBA in 1909. Simpson designed covers for Edinburgh publishers and was a prolific designer of bookplates. In 1918 he became an official war artist for the RAF and was stationed in France. Simpson was already forty-five when he took up etching in 1925, at the height of the boom period for the medium. His first twenty or so plates were etched with a gramophone needle and printed by the artist himself on the small press lent to him by a local Carlisle printing firm. His first exhibition of etchings took place in Glasgow at Wishart Brown in March 1926. His friend Frank Brangwyn wrote the catalogue introduction. A second highly successful show was staged in November 1926 by Alex, Reid and Lefevre in London. Simpson exhibited in Munich, Venice, Florence & Stockholm.

His first exhibition of etchings took place in Glasgow at Wishart Brown in March 1926. His friend Frank Brangwyn wrote the catalogue introduction. A second highly successful show was staged in November 1926 by Alex, Reid and Lefevre in London. Simpson exhibited in Munich, Venice, Florence & Stockholm.

A pair of coloured mezzotints, very fine colour & rare. Plate size: 610 x 490mm, 24 x 19¼" each. Few marks and minor stains. Unexamined out of frames.

A young man wearing a fur hat and carrying oars over his shoulder, gesturing towards a boat drawn up on the seashore to the left while looking back at a baby held in its mother's arms at the doorway to a thatched building; two boys carry nets and a basket on poles ahead of their father, and a little girl stands holding onto her mother's skirts. / Evening. Interior of a cottage where a young man wearing a fur hat is displaying his catch to his wife, who sits on the left with a sleeping baby on her knee and knitting on the stool beside her; a little girl and two boys bend over the basket at the man's feet, one boy showing a large crab, while the man holds up a large fish, and a kitten menaces a lobster.
