An allegorical plate, representing Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand (1609-41) travelling to Italy on a ship being pushed by mer-people. His father. Philip II of Spain, had him made Archbishop of Toledo aged 10 and a cardinal soon after (although he was never actually ordained). This allowed him an income while serving as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and a military commander during the Thirty Years' War which saw Spain lose control of much of the Spanish Netherlands.

He served as a general in the Thirty Years' War, the Eighty Years' War and the Franco-Spanish War, remaining undefeated. An early example, published by Pontius. The example in the British Museum (1871,1209.3425) has 'et excudit' removed. The painting is in the Museo del Prado (P01687).

A satire depicting Ferdinand VII of Spain (1784 - 1833), leading 'Liberty' in chains to the shrine of 'Our Lady of Loretto', who stands to the left holding a small child in her arms. Her dress is inscribed 'This drapery was work'd & presented to the holy virgin by the proud King of Spain in gratitude for his miraculous Restoration to his Throne & Kingdom. 1814'. After being overthrown by Napoleon in 1808, Ferdinand was forced to abdicate, with Napoleon choosing his brother Joseph Bonaparte as king of Spain. Uprisings broke out throughout the country, marking the beginning of the Peninsular War. Napoleon kept Ferdinand under guard in France for six years at the Chateau of Valençay, until 11th December 1813 when he signed the Treaty of Valençay, which acknowledged Ferdinand VII as king of Spain once again. A half-length portrait of Scottish astronomer and instrument maker James Ferguson (1710-76), hand resting on a celestial globe. Apart from three months at a grammar school Ferguson was self-taught. His 'Astronomy explained upon Sir Isaac Newton's Principles' was first published in 1756 and was still in print in 1811. CS: 5, Wellcome 965-3. See 6167 for proof before title.
