L’officier ne balança plus; ils conveniennet du rendez-vous, à l’heure fixée le conducteur (propiétaire de 5 ou 6 cabriolets) et officier de la garde nationale s’y trouva en uniforme, il previent son adversaire qu’il était très fort tireur ayant été maítre d’armes le jeune officier ne voulant rien entendre attaqua le premier injuria encore son combatant qui poussé à bout l’étend à ses pieds. African traders travelling to Cairo on a floating wooden barge; an Egyptian 'gardener' swimming in the River Nile to foreground, dragging a floating bundle of produce behind him. Title in English and French; numbered 'Pl XIV' lower right. From a series of prints depicting the customs, manners, costume etc. of Turkey and Egypt, drawn and engraved by Richard Dalton (1715? - 1791). Dalton, who was trained as an artist, went to Rome to pursue his studies, and in 1749 travelled with Roger Kynaston and John Frederick to Naples and Sicily, where they joined a party consisting of James Caulfeild, Earl of Charlemont, Francis Pierpoint Burton, and others. From thence Dalton accompanied Lord Charlemont on his tour to Constantinople/Istanbul, Greece, and Egypt. Dalton managed to obtain the position of librarian to George III. He was subsequently appointed keeper of the pictures and antiquary to his majesty. He was one of the original members of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1765, and became their treasurer. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1767. 'Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt, with the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, from Drawings made on the Spot.' was published in London in 1791 and is all three of Dalton's Tours in one volume.

Inscribed 'Private proof' in pencil lower left. David Law (1831 - 1901), etcher and landscape painter, born in Edinburgh; moved to London in 1850s, one of the founders of the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers, Engravers in 1881. Died in Sussex.

A very fine etching and aquatint. Plate 478 x 649mm. 18¾ x 25½". Toning and staining. Small tears into the margins. Very large margins, uncut.
A gateway with a large bay window made up of smaller windows, between angular towers with little cupolas, with castellated walls extending to either side, a square tower on the right, the nave of a separate chapel at right angles to the wall and people in the court between them, including small boys playing and two women looking at a statue surrounded by iron railings. One of a series of engraved views, begun in 1800 with the encouragement of Martin Routh, President of Magdalene College, Oxford. The first was an engraving of Lincoln Cathedral; by 1814 the series included all the English cathedrals and many major collegiate and parish churches. From around 1810, John Buckler's son, John Chessell Buckler (1793-1894) assisted his father in producing a vast number of drawings; J C Buckler's son George (1811-1886) later became involved in the enterprise also and in 1822, J C Buckler published the 'Views of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales', for which he wrote a text and in which he incorporated his father's engravings.

A fine and rare etching with aquatint, printed in sepia. Platemark: 340 x 490mm. (13¼ x 19¼"), with large margins Repaired tear to top edge in margin.
The River Thames near Eton with stone masons, barges, and other depictions of 18th century life on the river bank. Paul Sandby and his fellow artist and elder brother, Thomas, began their careers apprenticed to the Nottingham surveyor. From early in his career Sandby was also busy as a drawing master, counting several of his patrons, such as Lord Harcourt and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, among his pupils. In 1768 he was appointed chief drawing master at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.

Portrait of Rev. Henry Etough (1688 - 1757), Rector of Therfield from 1734 until his death in 1757, and he was interred there. He was awarded the degree of Master of Arts by mandamus in 1717 at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge. Following the death of Robert Watkins, Etough was appointed Rector of Colmworth in 1736.

Lettered below the image with the title, and two verses of six lines each from poet John Hughes' (1677-1720) successful tragedy 'Siege of Damascus'.
