Effie Deans is one of the central characters in The Heart of Midlothian, a novel by Sir Walter Scott, written in 1818. Effie had been imprisoned on a false charge, accused of having killed her illegitimate child. When an angry crowd stormed the goal, she had an opportunity to escape. But Effie decided to stay. Francis Henry Egerton. Earl of Bridgewater.
Gerard pinxt. =h= Grevedon. 1825.
Lithograph. 541 x 356mm. Uncut sheet..
Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (1756-1829), was a noted British eccentric, and supporter of natural theology. Egerton was known for giving dinner parties for dogs, where the dogs were dressed in the finest fashions of the day, down to fancy miniature shoes. Each day Egerton wore a new pair of shoes and he arranged the worn shoes into rows, so that he could measure the passing time. An animal lover, Egerton kept partridges and pigeons with clipped wings in his garden, allowing him to shoot them despite failing eyesight. Egerton never married, and upon his death, his title became extinct. He bequeathed to the British Museum the valuable Egerton Manuscripts, consisting of 67 manuscripts dealing with the literature of France and Italy.

This View of the Eastern Window of the Chapel of the Rolls completed 1820, is dedicated by Permission ro the Right Hon.ble Sir Tho.s Plumber KN.t Master of the Rolls by his Humble Servant, W.m Raphael Eginton.
[n.d., c.1820.]
Engraving. 425 x 270mm. Some wear to margins.
A stained-glass window with the armorial of the Master of the Rolls, with the personal arms of some of the Masters from 1362 to the encumbent, Thomas Plumber, from 1818 to 1824. To be Master is to serve in one of the highest offices in Law. It was a private chapel, built to serve Henry III's royal foundation of the Domus Conversorum in 1232. The inquisition into its affairs in 1308 was ordered by the King, but from 1377, when the Domus and the chapel were attached permanently to the office of Keeper of the Rolls, it became the private chapel of the Master of the Rolls. The Masters and clerks of Chancery had right to seats in it. At a later date other people could rent pews. From time to time the King interfered in the appointment of clergy: not successfully (?1638) when the Master of the Rolls refused to allow a royal nominee Matthew Griffith to officiate in the Chapel; successfully in 1684 when Harbottle Grimston was forced to dismiss Gilbert Burnet after the Guy Fawkes' day sermon which offended James II. Burnet says that 'North [Lord Chancellor] writ to the Master of the Rolls, that the King considered the Chapel of the Rolls as one of his own Chapels'. But Burnet was rather notorious and the King was James II. There are no later cases of royal interference or intervention by the Lord Chancellor. It is unlikely that any converts lived in the house, the Chapel was not very important and was rather neglected except as providing a nice little sinecure for 'clerical' relatives and friends of the current Mr., and of course, a rather gracious place for services.

Der Tanz der Almeh zy Benisouef.

Prag bey P. Bohmanns Erben [1825.]
Sepia aquatint. Sheet 230 x 325mm (9 x 12¾"). Trimmed within plate, nick in bottom edge.
'The Dance of the Almeh at Beni Suef', after a drawing by Fragonard. Originally they were like the Japanese Gheisha, being educated girls of good social standing, trained in dancing, singing and poetry, present at festivals and entertainments, and hired as mourners at funerals. By the mid-19th century the name had become synonymous with the more erotic belly dancer. This plate was etched by Jiri (George) Döbler for the scarce Prague edition of 'Voyage dans le Levant' by Louis, Comte de Forbin. Forbin (1779-1841), a painter and antiquarian, succeded Vivant-Denon (head of Bonaparte's 'Savants') as curator of the Musée du Louvre after the restoration of the Bourbon Monarchy. He travelled around the Levant 1817-18, painting and collecting artifacts for French museums. The original French edition was illustrated with lithographs. see V & A SP.265:71
