A plate from 'Itinerarium Curiosum, Or, An Account of the Antiquitys and Remarkable Curiositys in Nature or Art, Observ'd in Travels thro' Great Brittan', by Dr William Stukeley (1687-1765), who best known for his early researches of the prehistoric monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury in Wiltshire. Although the book was first published in 1724, there was a second edition in 1776.

Rare etching with fine hand colour. 300 x 215mm (12 x 8½"). Mounted in album paper.
A woman's head, topped with a conical hat trimmed with a monstrous arrangement of feathers, peers over a huge fur muff. Eclipses were in the news in 1787 because there were seven full eclipses of the sun and moon, the maximum number possible, which usually happens once every 130 years. A note on the British Museum's example of this print (from the Banks Collection) ascribes it to a Miss V. Aynscombe.

A man and his son walk barefoot towards an inn. The man carries a stick with his belongings tied to it. The son carries a small sack on his back. By William Davison (1780 - 1858), publisher of popular prints and satires, and pharmacist, usually referred to as Davison of Alnwick. In the period between 1812 and 1817, Davison produced a number of caricatures, amusing if somewhat crudely executed plates often based on better known prints. Peter Isaac suggests that the majority date to about 1816.

Plates 8 and 9 showing the external and internal structures of the third Eddystone Lighthouse. Smeaton’s lighthouse was modelled on the shape of an oak tree, and employed several novel engineering techniques. It remained in use until 1877, and was then re-erected on Plymouth Hoe, where it still stands as a tourist attraction.

An Italian illustration of the first Eddystone Lighthouse, copied from a print drawn, etched and published by Henry Winstanley, the designer and builder of the lighthouse. It shows the structure with the cranes needed to transfer people from boats to the rock. Winstanley (1644-1703) was a painter who is said to have learned etching from Wenceslaus Hollar. In the 1690s he opened an amusement arcade in Piccadilly, ''Winstanley's Water-works'', filled with automata of his own design. Having made a fortune he became a merchant, but when two of his ships were wrecked on the Eddystone Rocks, he funded the building of the first recorded offshore lighthouse. If building a tower on a featureless rock was not hard enough, during the construction the enterprise was attacked by a French privateer and destroyed in 1697, with Winstanley taken into captivity. However Louis XIV ordered his release, stating 'France is at war with England, not with humanity', allowing Winstanley to complete the structure in 1698. In 1703 Winstanley was overseeing some repairs when the Great Storm of 1703 hit and both Winstanley and his lighthouse were swept away.

George Eden, Earl of Auckland (1784-1849), politician and governor-general of India 1837-40. In later years Auckland served as first lord of the Admiralty, and is credited with reforming the Admiralty during this period and enabling it to effectively conduct the Crimean War a few years later. This large portrait was published shortly after Auckland's death. Auckland, New Zealand was named after him.

A portrait of British statesman and diplomat William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland (1745 - 1814). Three-quarter length, sitting, directed and looking towards the left, holding a paper in his left hand. Beside him is a table with an inkwell on it. The Auckland Islands group to the south of New Zealand are named after Eden. A whaling vessel, 'Ocean', rediscovered the islands in 1806, finding them uninhabited. Captain Abraham Bristow named them 'Lord Auckland's' in honour of his father's friend William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland. In 1771 Auckland published 'Principles of Penal Law', and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions.

William Eden (1744 - 1814), 1st Baron Auckland, English statesman; educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1768. In 1771 he published Principles of Penal Law, and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions. In 1772 he took up an appointment as an under-Secretary of State. He represented New Woodstock in the parliaments of 1774 and 1780, and Heytesbury in those of 1784 and 1790. In 1776 he became a commissioner on the Board of Trade and Plantations. In 1778 he carried an Act for the improvement of the treatment of prisoners, and accompanied the earl of Carlisle as a commissioner to North America on an unsuccessful mission to settle certain disputes with certain colonists there. On his return in 1779 he published his widely-read Four Letters to the Earl of Carlisle, and in 1780 became Chief Secretary for Ireland. He gained election to the Irish House of Commons as the member for Dungannon and became a member of the Irish Privy Council. While in Ireland he established the National Bank. In 1840 Gov. Hobson selected and named the site of Auckland after him, now the capital of New Zealand. For a short period it was called Bishop's Auckland.

Edinburgh's extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat, is in the far left background, and the Pentland Hills are faintly visible behind the city spires. Heriot's Hospital is to the right of the castle mound.
