Anglo-American Atlantic Yacht Race of 1870. Start of the Yachts Dauntless and Cambria from Queenstown to New York on the 4th July... [publisher's dedication.]
T.G. Dutton lith, form a Painting by R.L. Stopford. [monogram in plate.]
London, Published May 25th 1871 by W.m Foster, 17, Billiter Street, City.
Scarce hand coloured lithograph. Image 370 x 615mm (14½ x 24¼"). Crease to lower right corner, some faint spotting; unexamined out of frame.
The schooner yacht Cambria, of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, won the "great ocean race" of 1870 against the American yacht Dauntless, from Daunt Rock, Queenstown, Ireland, July 4th, to Sandy Hook on the New Jersey coast, USA - arriving July 27th. The Dauntless was commanded by James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841 - 1918), publisher of the New York Herald and the youngest Commodore ever of the New York Yacht Club. His extravagant lifestyle and shocking behaviour are believed to have inspired the phrase "Gordon Bennett" as an expression of incredulity. Short descriptions of each yacht below title. Sofonisba Angosciola.
From an original Painting by herself in the Gallery at Althorp. Engraved by Hawksworth.
[n.d. c.1760.]
Engraving. 165 x 121mm. 6½ x 4¾". Trimmed to platemark.
Taken from a "Self-Portrait with Clavichord", 1561. Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532-1625) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. As a female artist and within a certain class, she could not transcend the contraints of her sex. Despite this setback, she sought to stylise portraiture which in turn led her to be invited to join the Spanish Court, which became the turning point in her career, and King Philip II took a great interest in her future, wellbeing and artwork. She is one of few female artists mentioned in Vesari's "Lives of Artists." From the Collection of J.S. Bumpus.

att Amsterdam by Nicolaus Visscher with Privilidge of ye High and Mighty States Generall.
Engraving, fine; sheet 365 x 260mm (14¼ x 10¼"). Trimmed; tipped into album sheet, slight nicks left edge.
Queen Anne (1665-1714), second daughter of James II, while a princess. In 1683 she married Prince George of Denmark, an alliance encouraged by Louis XIV, who wished to see the naval powers of England and Denmark united against the Dutch. As queen, Anne was intimate and dependent on Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, whose husband, the Duke, controlled the war against France. However, in 1711, she dismissed the Marlboroughs, largely because of her sympathy with Tory opposition to the Duke's conduct of the war. The most important constitutional landmark of her reign was the Act of Union with Scotland in 1707.

Rare engraving, platemark 310 x 225mm (12¼ x 8¾"), with large margins. Crease through centre not visible from front.
Anne, queen of Great Britain and Ireland (1665-1714). Anne's twelve year reign proved a watershed between the violence of the seventeenth century and the stability and prosperity of the eighteenth century, which owed much to her personally. In 1707 she signed the Act of Union, uniting England and Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain; Anne's fervent support for the Union contributed significantly to its acceptance by both kingdoms. Meanwhile, her staunch support of the duke of Marlborough in the face of opposition made it possible for him to use his skills to re-establish the balance of power in Europe. During Anne's reign neither political party triumphed; the final victory of the whigs came only after her death, with the reign of George I (whose Hanoverian succession Anne supported).
