Battaglia Navale trà Inglesi et Olandesi seguita alli XI, e iz di Settembre L'Anno 1666 nel Mare Brittanico.
[Etched by Gerard Bouttats?]
[Vienna, c.1672.]
Etching, scarce. 305 x 415mm (12 x 16¼"). Small margins, slightly foxed. Tear and splits in binding folds with old repairs, chips in margins.
A sea battle during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7), fought over mercentile supremacy. As no notable sea battle was fought in September the battle is likely to be the 'St James' Day Battle', fought 4-5th August off North Foreland and Orfordness. The Flemish engraver Gerard Bouttats, who worked in Antwerp, Cologne and Vienna, illustrated Galeazzo Gualdo Priorato's histories, including an Italian-text map of the Dutch attack on Medway in 1667.

Sofonisba Angosciola.
Sofonisba Angosciola.
From an original Painting by herself in the Gallery at Althorp. Engraved by Hawksworth.
[n.d. c.1760.]
Engraving. 165 x 121mm. 6½ x 4¾". Trimmed to platemark.
Taken from a "Self-Portrait with Clavichord", 1561. Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532-1625) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. As a female artist and within a certain class, she could not transcend the contraints of her sex. Despite this setback, she sought to stylise portraiture which in turn led her to be invited to join the Spanish Court, which became the turning point in her career, and King Philip II took a great interest in her future, wellbeing and artwork. She is one of few female artists mentioned in Vesari's "Lives of Artists."

Lithograph, printed area 160 x 320mm (6¼ x 12½"). Rare.
The famous Ankerwycke yew, which stands beside the ruins of St Mary's Priory on the banks of the river Thames, near Wraysbury in Berkshire. Now 2,500 years old, the events associated with the tree include the sealing of the Magna Carta (the meadows of Runnymede are on the other side of the Thames) and King Henry VIII's courting of Anne Boleyn. St Mary's priory was built during the reign of Henry II, before passing into private lands following the dissolution of the monasteries. The site is now property of the National Trust. His brother was William Alfred Delamotte (1775-1863), drawing-master at the Sandhurst Military Academy, whose son Philip was a photography pioneer known for his series on the disassembly of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park and its reconstruction in Sydenham.

Rare engraving, platemark 310 x 225mm (12¼ x 8¾"), with large margins. Crease through centre not visible from front.
Anne, queen of Great Britain and Ireland (1665-1714). Anne's twelve year reign proved a watershed between the violence of the seventeenth century and the stability and prosperity of the eighteenth century, which owed much to her personally. In 1707 she signed the Act of Union, uniting England and Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain; Anne's fervent support for the Union contributed significantly to its acceptance by both kingdoms. Meanwhile, her staunch support of the duke of Marlborough in the face of opposition made it possible for him to use his skills to re-establish the balance of power in Europe. During Anne's reign neither political party triumphed; the final victory of the whigs came only after her death, with the reign of George I (whose Hanoverian succession Anne supported). Rare engraving by the Nuremburg printmaker and publisher Johann Lorenz Höning (1700-170, fl.).

Queen Anne (1665-1714) ascended the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702. She favoured moderate Tory politicians, who shared her Anglican religious views over their opponents, the Whigs. The Whigs however grew more powerful during the course of the War of the Spanish Succession, until in 1710 Anne dismissed many of them from office. Despite many pregnancies, Anne died without surviving children and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart.

Engraving with accompanying letterpress sheet, each 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾"), with very large margins. Slight foxing.
Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567), French soldier, statesman and diplomat. Montmorency spent most of his career serving under king Francis I, fighting in the Italian wars and then, as governor of Languedoc, defending Provence against the invasion of Charles V from northern Italy. He was also an important diplomat, working with Cardinal Wolsey to negotiate an alliance between Francis I and Henry VII in 1527, although he fell from favour after a settlement he brokered with Charles V failed. Montmorency recovered his previous status, however, under subsequent French monarchs. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

Marie' de Medici (1575-1642), Queen of France as second wife of Henri IV. Following her husband's assassination at the hands of a fanatical Catholic in 1610 she acted as regent until her son, the future Louis XIII, came of age. A notable patron of the arts, Marie oversaw the construction and furnishing of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris (modelled after the Palazzo Pitti in Marie's hometown of Florence) and employed Rubens as her court painter. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men (and women) hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.
