A view probably seen by the amateur artist, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) when visiting the continent in the 1820s, and reproduced by an unidentified lithographer. Whitby inherited the country seat of Newlands, Hampshire in 1819, on the death of naval officer Sir William Cornwallis, and established a private press there to print lithographs by herself and others.

Two views near Milford on Sea, Hampshire, looking towards the needles, taken from Newlands, the estate the naval officer Sir William Cornwallis bought in 1799. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868). With a very late and worn double portrait of Henri IV and Msrie de Médicis by Simon van de Passe (etched c.1625, from a medal).

The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

Three Otterhounds. July - From the Sportsman Calendar. Maud Alice Earl (1864-1943) was an eminent British-American canine painter. Her works are much enjoyed by dog enthusiasts and also accurately record many breeds. Earl was the born in London, the daughter of artist George Earl and his first wife Alice Beaumont Rawlins. Maud's profession was the continuation of a family tradition. George Earl, an avid sportsman and noted sporting painter, was his daughter's first teacher and had his daughter study the anatomy of her subjects, drawing dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skill. She later said that her father's instruction had given her ability that set her apart from other dog painters. After her father's tutelage Maud went on to study at Royal Female School of Art (later incorporated into the Central School of Art). Earl became famous during the Victorian Era, a time when women were not expected to make their living at painting. Nevertheless, she developed a select clientele, including Royals amongst her patrons such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. Although evidently extremely successful in England, Earl felt that the world she knew had been destroyed by World War I and she emigrated to New York City in 1916. By this time her work had received wide international recognition and her popular images were published in a number of books and in print form. The Sportsman's Year featured twelve of Earl's works as engravings. Maud Earl died in New York in 1943 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

Scene from Homer's 'Odyssey'. Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, sits at her loom awaiting the return of her husband. Engraved after 'Penelope at her Loom', 1764 (Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Sussex), an early painting produced in Rome by the history painter Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807). Born in Switzerland, Kauffman lived in England from 1766 to 1781 and was one of only two women (the other being Mary Moser) amongst the thirty-six founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts. In Persian mythology, the péris are oriental heavenly creatures that embody Prince Achmed's yearning for another form of existence. A beautiful péri appears to him with her retinue and promises him redemption: she promises that the barrier between Heaven and Earth can be overcome by the power of love. La Péri, by Friedrich Burgmüller, Jean Coralli, and Théophile Gautier, was first performed in 1843 at the Paris Opéra. After Marie Françoise Catherine Doetger "Fanny" Corbaux (1812–1883) a British painter and biblical commentator. She was also the inventor of kalsomine (calcimine), whitewash with added zinc oxide.
