A rare receipt from the New River Company, the corporation founded in 1619 to manage the New River, an artificial waterway built to bring drinking water from Ware into London. In 1876 the Company's water was found to be the purest of the eight suppliers (not hard as five (including the Chelsea Water Works) still pumped water from the Thames!). The Company was absorbed into the Metropolitan Water Board in 1904. It is interesting that company representatives would attend Peel's Coffee-House in Fleet Street twice a week to receive complaints.

A label for a bottle of perfume, the space for which type not filled in. Laugier, Pere et Fils was founded in 1756 and is said to have been the oldest perfumery establishment in Paris. It was taken over and renamed Renaud et Cie in 1839. The story of the company was explored in the book 'Elixir' by Professor Theresa Levitt.

Rare ANS, ink on ruled paper, addressed to 'Mr. Towgood St Neots Paper Mills'; with engraved billhead/letterhead. Total sheet 330 x 200mm, 13 x 8". Folds; lower right corner chipped.
Builder's headed ledger sheet used as a letter of introduction soliciting business, the letterhead illustrated with vignettes of a scaffolded chimney stack and church steeple.
Provenance: from a scrap album compiled c.1840 - 1880 by Alfred Towgood of Riverside, a paper mill owner at St. Neots, Huntingdon. He was also a Lieutenant in the Duke of Manchester's Light Horse.

This piece, in slightly distressed condition, has done well to survive and preserve the information it carries. Bears a short manuscript account; dated 22 July 1746.
